Cashmere Cat’s DC club debut pleases crowd

DJs Cashmere Cat and Trippy Turtle played a wild, sold-out show on March 20 at U Street Music Hall. The crowd revealed a very mixed bag of followers from savvy U St.- goers to college students to EDM bunnies.

Turtle and cat-related paraphernalia − such as ninja turtle backpacks, cat ears and furry wolf hats − filled the dark room illuminated only by neon paper lanterns and disco balls. Trippy Turtle, suited in a Japanese turtle onesie, mixed some memorable R&B tunes, and then leaned back and outlandishly sung along while dancing against the wall.

Following Trippy Turtle, Cashmere Cat took the stage. DJ Magnus August Hoiberg, better known by his stage name Cashmere Cat, hails from Norway, and graced U Street Music Hall with his melodic, twinkling and mystical beats.

The common feature of both Trippy Turtle and Cashmere Cats records? That addictive bed squeaking sound that no one can get enough of. The energy in the hall was effervescent, with circles of friends creating their own mini dance parties. The crowd spun in eddies while Cashmere Cat played his most popular remixes, including “Kiss Kiss,” “Mirror Maru” and “Wedding Bells.”

To the crowd’s awe and excitement, Cashmere Cat played their favorite throwbacks, including a remix of “Take You Down” by Chris Brown, “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and the contentious “Bound 2” by Kanye West. The booming voice of Kim echoed over and over and the crowd screamed with her, “UH-HUH HONEY.”

You can listen to both Cashmere Cat and Trippy Turtle’s tracks on Soundcloud. Cashmere Cat’s 2014 EP Wedding Bells is also available on Spotify.
