Eagle Rants April 15, 2012

•I think strong women are beautiful.

•If Emily made a conservative woman director of Women's Initiative, I would love her forever. TIME FOR A CHANGE!

•AU needs to work on filling the old McDonald's space. I only eat lunch at 2pm now because I'm afraid of the Subway/TDR lines at noon. I wish we could at least know that AU is TRYING to find a vendor!!! :(

•What is "doing the Day of Silence"? Is that a Catholic thing? -confused alum again

•The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.

•@"Why does the library close so early on Friday? Where else am I supposed to borrow movies for free?" You can borrow DVDs for free at any DC public library. There's one in Tenleytown right by the metro. They have a very wide modern DVD selection of all the latest shows (which is why it's a complete waste for AU to waste our tuition money on an ever expanding entertainment library).

•@”To all the pro-lifers that have clearly never had a biology class, please look up the biological definition of a parasite. If you think a five month old fetus is "viable" without an array of modern medical interventions, you are sorely mistaken. But thanks for playing!” I suppose we should just kill all the adults on kidney dialyses and other medical interventions because they are “parasites” right? A fetus is viable whether or not it needs medical intervention. You need learn your basic biology, and look up the word viable. But thanks for playing!

•I’m pro choice, but that choice has a limit when another life is involved. I think abortion should only be legal for the first 10 weeks rather than the first 20 weeks. After 10 weeks you period is 6 weeks late. Any reasonable person notices a missed period within 6 WEEKS! (that’s 36 days!). Having a 10 week abortion timeline would allow for taking the abortion pill rather than needing surgical procedures. I don’t see why anyone needs to wait 20 weeks to have an abortion? That just seems cruel. But curious to hear from people who disagree?

•@former ex-bf visiting for the weekend to see if they relationship can be saved: How did it go?

•Dear freshmen who can't deal with disappointment: there will always be times when you lose, there will always be failure. The only was you can truly lose in life is if you can't learn to handle that with class. Grow up, the real world won't treat you like your mommy did.

•I just want to say one thing to you editor: you go glen coco!

•this semester has had some ups and downs, but with 2 weeks left till I'm done with my undergrad life, I'm realizing how much I'm going to miss AU. Thanks eagle rants community, for listening to my leggings-as-pants rants

•AU is no longer the "most politically active university"... Where have you been?

•It well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime, so let me say before we part, so much of me is made from what I learned from you, you'll be with me like a hand print on my heart.

•I was bullied, and I think I want to come to the meeting. But what kind of things will the bullying club do? Will it actually address to root causes of bullying (like lack of education in psychology in primary and secondary school), or will it just make posters that talk about how bullying is bad in order to "raise awareness"? (can’t stand clubs like that that exist for primarily socializing purposes)

•@Photography Club - YES PLEASE!!!

•So AU is ranked 82 for national universities. I love love love AU and it saddens me that we don’t have a higher ranking. There are 35 state schools ranked ahead of us. But if you only calculate private universities, AU is ranked 47 for national universities. I like that calculation better because then I feel like I go to a top 50 school. AU has the student talent of a top 50 school. Out students are every bit as bright as GW students. I hate that our ranking is so low.

•@Bullying Club - I'm busy from 8-10ish but any other time would work.

•Are there really secret societies at AU? Some guy a a frat party told me there were but idk if he was just trying to mess with me or not?

•One of my professors is giving me a bunch of crap because I missed one class out of the entire semester because I was actually sick. I haven't done anything to deserve this kind of treatment. So thanks a lot, jerk, I really needed one more problem and some more stress in my life. This semester can't be over fast enough.

•Freshmen SPA girl in Human Geography... I know you like that boy you sit next too. I'm a friend of his, and I bet you didn't know that he likes you too. He's a senior and doesn't want to start something when he's graduating so soon, but you two seem like you could have something special. Make the first move or at least try to edge him on... It would make you both happy :)

•The life of a repo man is always intense.

•I left AU after my freshman year for a few reasons... I decided international relations wasn't the right major for me, I had trouble relating to/making friends with anyone, I hated dorm living, and I wanted to be more independent. I moved to CA where I work fulltime while going to school and live on my own, and find it much more fulfilling. Although it is going to take me an extra year to graduate, it was the BEST decision ever.

•@Ranter whose boyfriend won't hold your hand: Original ranter, here. He won't hold my hand, either. He won't do anything that might indicate we're anything more than friends. And I know it's just that he's still self-conscious about what people will think of a gay couple. But I still wish he would once in a while.

•A WHOLE NEW WORLD

•I just got a fancy schmancy smart phone and what do I use it for? Cat pictures. CAT PICTURES FOR ALL!

•There are many valid reasons for a woman to get an abortion, and yes a fetus can "destroy" the mother. Unfortunately, even with our modern medicine, complications during pregnancy can occur that could cost the mother's life. Would you still say the mother is heartless for aborting the pregnancy so she herself won't die? This is not a black and white issue, and you can't let your emotions guide your decision. In this case its either the undeveloped life form in the womb or the mature human being with full legal rights. Which is more important?

•I disapprove of the volume of your incompetence.

•I wish someone had turned off the lights in the old McDonalds... :/

•You're sending me really mixed signals. I think you like me, but you don't want me to do anything about it right now.

•Ended a sentence with a preposition. Footnoted it with a link to grammar girl. Like a boss.

•"Arizona now defines gestational age as beginning on the first day of a woman’s last period, rather than at fertilization." WHAT? Seriously? I'm extremely concerned about this.

•I wish there was a virtual world where I could practice my social skills and develop confidence. Maybe then I could find the courage to talk to you.

•So frustrated by all the anti-abortion ranters. An embryo is not a baby/person in the exact same way that an acorn is not a tree. Personally, women who are already alive > embryos. tl;dr: if you don't want an abortion, don't get one and stfu.

•What possessed my professor to assign a paper to be due at midnight on a Sunday?

•Also, FTL=For the Lose. Just like FTW= For the Win.

•I miss my grandfather. He died on halloween and its fathers day in two months. I feel bad for my father.

•sippy cups are a way of life, YOLO mofo's.....YOLO

•is it wrong that I'm proud to be a biddie?

•Feminazi is one of the most disgusting terms out there. As a Jewish feminist, people who try to compare fighting for equality to the near extermination of my people sicken me.

•Does anyone know who the writer of the "queenofthequad" tumblr is? The Princess Bride, HP, Mean Girls, and AVPM references make me want to meet this person!!

•@BillyJoelBoy, my parents got my name from a Billy Joel Song :)

•In the long run, in a capitalistic economy, a gender pay gap simply can't exist. If women really did the same work for 8% less pay, then the demand for female workers would increase naturally, as corporations could realize higher net profit margins by higher more women. Feminists will counter this by saying "it's a boys club" and manager's personal preference overrules their logic. At best, this "factor" can only slow the inevitable given natural turnover in upper management.

•The rain, of course, will come With grandstand flourishes and hullabaloo, The silvered streets, flashbulb and kettledrum, To douse and rouse the citizens, to strew Its rhinestones randomly, piecemeal. But for the moment the whole world is real. -The Lull by Anthony Hecht

•@photographyclub I back this idea! :) Sometimes I go by myself or with a friend or two to shoot in the city, sometimes it's more relaxing to do shoot by yourself, but, yeah! :D

•So, how many rants does the editor have to read every day that make no sense? [Editor's note: Generally not that many. Although this editor does get Rants that just say "1" every now and then.]

•New plan: I'm just going to live near campus, explore the city, and sit in on classes while I pretend to be Steve Jobs. Tuition, GPA; goodbye.

Rant here!
