Synth-pop songstress "lights" up 9:30 club on March 5

Originally born as Valerie Ann Poxleitner, the 24-year-old Canadian pixie known as Lights will be gracing D.C. with her presence on March 5 at 9:30 club. Her most recent album “Siberia” was released in October of last year, with singles “Toes” and “Siberia” having regular radio play. On this album, Lights dipped her toes into dubstep, but her overall sound is more synth-heavy, bolstered by her incredible (and occasionally Auto-Tuned) vocals. Her musical influences include Björk, U2, Supertramp, Electric Light Orchestra, and the Cure.

Unlike most pop singers, Lights’ songs aren't sappy love ballads or frat party anthems, but rather have an empowering nature that cuts deeper to the core. Lights sings about love lost and gained, being strong, and enjoying life, and don't misinterpret her modesty or sweetness for weakness - she's a powerful heroine. Plus, Lights' girl-next-door geekiness doesn't fit the normal pop star mold, whether it's her constantly tweeting about her love of video games or using acclaimed graphic novel "Watchmen" and TV anime "Sailor Moon" as basis for her album art. And don’t let her pretty face fool you- she has tons of badass tattoos spread across her body.

Love her or hate her, there's no ignoring Lights' rising talent. If you’re looking for a fun concert that will take you into another dimension, Lights is your partner in crime. Tickets for her 9:30 club show on March 5 are still on sale, so snag them before they're gone.
