A collage of musicians bring a crowd-pleasing show to 9:30 club

Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs put on a stellar show Wednesday night at the 9:30 Club. Aqueduct and The Posies, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow both of Big Star and Stringfellow of R.E.M, opened for Benson. The Posies served as Benson’s backup band, although they often overpowered his mellow voice.

Aqueduct’s short opener had unusual synth sound effects and chord progressions. Lead singer David Terry was pleased that audience members came to the show early to check them out. The Posies followed with an array of numbers, ranging from upbeat to darker rock. After five years out of the touring scene, the band put on a set that dedicated fans found pleasing.

Then, Benson took the stage accompanied by Auer and Stringfellow. Benson captivated the audience with his wide vocal range and intriguing melodies. Crowd pleasers included both electric and acoustic numbers, “Sittin’ Pretty,” “Cold Hands (Warm Heart),” “A Whole Lot Better” and encore “Crosseyed.”
