Music Notes: "Live At The Playboy Mansion"

Grade: B

Bob Sinclair "Live At The Playboy Mansion" Sounds like: The sound track to "Boogie Nights," with a fancy-schmancy "international DJ" to add more glamour to it.

Bob Sinclair, a French house DJ, has had the Midas touch with his releases in the dance music scene. The ubiquitous "World Hold On" was named by Billboard Magazine as the "Number One Hot Dance Club Play Single of 2006." His latest album, "Soundz of Freedom," produced another hot single, "Rock This Party."

Sinclair represents the school of French house, with fellow groove purveyors Daft Punk, Etienne de Crécy and Dimitri From Paris. This style already incorporates a lot of disco-leaning grooves and synthy sensibilities, so Sinclair is really in his element on his DJ set from the Mansion. The "Live At The Playboy Mansion" series has featured some very well-known DJs, including Felix da Housecat. This latest installment is no different in quality.

The CD cover advertises this as an "intimate selection of chic soul grooves and seductive disco classics mixed by Paris' International Superstar DJ," and verily enough, it delivers just that. Formerly Chris the French Kiss, Sinclair is a perfect candidate to rock the party "for the beautiful people."

Tracks like Space's "Magic Fly" and Alexander Robotnick's "Problems D'Amour" are standard French house electro-leaning fare. There are also plenty of disco tunes, like Love De Luxe's "Here Comes That Sound." Finally, there are some swanky, chilled-out '70s tunes, including Grace Jones' "Libertango" and Le Magnifique's "Tatiana Glamorous." Sinclair also throws in a couple of his own tracks.

If your idea of a set at the Playboy Mansion is a "Boogie Nights"-ish sound track, then you would definitely like this album. Its strong retro sensibility, with an added house kick, is sure to delight fans of eclectic electronica.
