Veggie-friendly eating

Since almost all D.C. eateries serve up at least a few meat-free options, the District is a great place to go green. Check out these other vegan- and vegetarian-friendly restaurants - in all parts of Northwest D.C., and all serving up their fare for $13 or less - sure to please omnivores and herbivores alike.

Downtown: Java Green 1020 19th St., NW Metro: Farragut North (red line) (202) 775-8899 www.javagreen.net

Delectable, almost all-vegan lunch options - mainly Asian - priced from $5.95 to $12.50. The meat-free chicken ramen noodle bowl is good enough to make Top Ramen seem like that smelly kid who always got picked last for middle school kickball.

Shaw: Soul Vegetarian 2606 Georgia Ave., NW Metro: Howard University-Shaw (green line) (202) EAT-SOUL (328-7685) www.kingdomofyah.com/SV.htm

Located right across the street from Howard University, Soul Veg serves up 100 percent vegan soul food priced from $4 to $9, and it's all amazing. Try the gyro platter with Jerusalem Bakes (chunky baked potato pieces) and it'll be no surprise why this hole-in-the-wall is a revered local favorite.

Adams Morgan: Amsterdam Falafel Shop 2425 18th St., N.W. Metro: Woodley Park-Adams Morgan (red line) (202) 234-1969 www.falafelshop.com

The Falafelshop fixes only two things, and two things fixed well: falafel and heaping servings of twice-cooked Dutch style French fries (served with mayo, of course). The topping bar adds a fabulous DIY angle to the experience, but the best part is that it's open late every night of the week - including until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Georgetown: Harmony Caf? 3287-1/2 M St., NW (lower level) Metro: Foggy Bottom-GWU (orange and blue lines) (202) 338-3881

This pan-Asian joint serves meat dishes as well, but almost everything on the menu can be made vegan or vegetarian. Even more exciting? Everything's under $10. Now that's delicious.
