Miami University of Ohio has been fined $27,500 for failing to give sexual assault victims written notices of the outcomes of disciplinary proceedings regarding their cases.
According to an article from the Chronicle of Higher Education web site, this past summer the Department of Education found that the university had violated a federal law, known as the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to disclose information about crimes on their campuses.
There were nine sexual assault cases at the university from 1999-2004, but in six of those cases, students did not receive written explanations of the conclusions of the judiciary proceedings.
In a letter to the university this week, the department said that the violations posed "severe" harm to students on the campus.
Richard D. Little, a university spokesman, said the violation was "simply an omission of an overworked office."
Miami is the third college to receive a fine under the Clery Act, which was enacted in 1990.
