Advisors join Student Activities

The AU Student Activities office received nearly 50 applications this past summer for the dual-person position of Program Advisors. Chris Tankersley and Katrina Fauss were hired, according to Karen Gerlach, Director of Student Activities, for their experience in the field.

The two were needed after Program Advisor Tracy Florence resigned in the spring and Ernie Kimlin resigned this summer.

Gerlach said the criteria for hiring included previous professional experience advising student clubs and organizations, programming, as well as experience with students from all types of backgrounds.

The candidates were interviewed by Student Activities staff, other Campus Life and University staff members, and by student leaders.

Both Tankersley and Fauss see their roles as advisors to include assisting students while standing on the sidelines. Tankersley says that his goal is to work with students, while letting them "make the event their own."

Fauss says that the key to successful student programs is for them to be student-driven.

So far both advisors have been busy with Welcome Week events. Their next big task is Club Recognition.
