Field Hockey streak ends at 10

Lady Eagles shutout Holy Cross (3-0), but fall to Boston University (4-2)

The AU Field Hockey team split its back-to-back road games this weekend, defeating Holy Cross on Saturday falling to Boston University on Sunday.

The team shut out Holy Cross, 3-0, as it won its fourth straight Patriot League game and improved its record to 11-1 overall. Senior Maureen Daniel got the Eagles off to a quick start scoring her eighth goal of the season on a penalty shot five minutes into the game.

Holy Cross came out strong in the second half with three quick shots on goal in the first few minutes. But senior 'keeper Laura Miller and her defense were stronger grabbing eight saves on the day.

Miller's saves rallied the Eagles as junior Javiera Villagra scored off Holy Cross goalie Jennifer Corsilli's save with less than eight minutes remaining.

Freshman Camila Infante added the third nail in the coffin when she dodged through three Holy Cross defenders, putting it past Corsilli.

High off the win, AU traveled to MIT to play Boston University. Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn't continue their 10-game winning streak, losing 4-2.

BU scored the first goal of the game unassisted, but AU freshman Heidi Hirshberger answered back with 5:18 remaining in the half off a pass from fellow freshman Kaitlin DeTroia.

The teams went into halftime tied at one.

The Eagles took the lead for the first and only time in the second half when DeTroia notched her own goal off a fast break catching the BU defense and 'keeper off guard.

The Terriers dominated the majority of the second half scoring minutes after DeTroia. Then, BU's Celeste Hubbard scored two quick goals in the span of 1:08.

Miller ended the day with five saves facing 14 shots.

The Eagles return to action when they travel to Towson University on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m.
