Cast delivers sexy, strong 'Cabaret'

As the lights go down and the audience hushes, the dazzling lights of the word "CABARET" illuminate the stage as the backdrop. The Department of Performing Arts' production of "Cabaret" is not to be missed.

"A brilliant display of talent," said Scott Davidek, a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences. This statement which is not far from the truth. From the sexy suggestive dance numbers to the tear-jerking scenes dealing with the reality of Nazi occupation, the cast holds the audience's attention throughout the entirety of its performance. Set designer James Krozner has done an amazing job devising a set that is extremely powerful. The set, combined with the cast's immense energy, makes for a perfect evening.

"The music was amazing, the costumes were awesome and the four leads were phenomenal; an overall wonderful show," said Maia Gantchuva, a sophomore in CAS.

The subtle references to drugs and illicit sex acts are plentiful and are precious attributes that only accentuate the essence of "Cabaret."

The focal point of the show is the love story between mysterious performer Sally Bowles and na?ve novelist Clifford Bradshaw. The relationship between the two is offset by the underworld of "Cabaret."

The flashy persona of the Emcee delivers the necessary comedic relief throughout the show's rather serious plot.

AU's theater department fully displayed its talent by double-casting the roles of the Emcee and Sally Bowles. This decision allows Cabaret to be performed and viewed through the eyes of different insights into the show's world.

"It's an intense performance that made me realize that life is not just a cabaret," said Jenna Godin-Conz, freshman in School of Communication.

This is a worthwhile way to spend a Saturday night, not only because the AU students are exceptional, but also because it is an activity highly unlike the usual college weekend scene.
