Weekend shows to please D.C.

Thursday, Sept. 4 Double Header - Cake and Cheap Trick at the 9:30 club vs. Aerosmith and Britney Spears on the National Mall.

Aretha Franklin, Good Charlotte, Mary J. Blige and others will join Aerosmith and Britney Spears for an NFL Kick-Off celebration. This free event will be held on the National Mall. Get there early; gates open at 3:30 p.m. Performances will run 6 to 9 p.m.

On the other side of the District, perennially strange, art rockers Cake collaborate with vintage rockers Cheap Trick at the 9:30 Club. The bands are part of the Unlimited Sunshine Tour, with Cake touring in support of its 2001 release "Comfort Eagle" and Cheap Trick playing tunes from its extensive catalogue that includes the newly released "Special One." Tickets cost $35.

Friday, Sept. 5Q and not U at the Black Cat.

D.C. favorites and dance punk aficionados Q and not U return to the Black Cat prior to embarking on a three month long national tour. On Sept. 8, the band will release a seven-inch titled "X-Polynation/Book of Flags." Also opening are Baltimore spaz-rockers The Apes. Check out these opening acts before the rest of the music community adopts them as their own.

Saturday, Sept. 6D:Fuse at Five and the Raveonettes at the Black Cat.

Texas' most well-known DJ, D:Fuse will be performing at Five, bringing along his own blends of trance and house music. Also recommended is the Danish-rock duo, the Raveonettes' performance at the Black Cat.

Sunday, Sept. 7Dashboard Confessional, MXPX, Brand New and Vendetta Red at Bender Arena.

Headliner Dashboard is touring in support of its latest release, "A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar," which destroyed expectations entering the Billboard 200 at No. 2.

Opening the show will be new-school punkers Vendetta Red and Brand New, plus Washington state's favorite sons MXPX, who is supporting its latest release "Before Everything and After," which has been garnering stellar reviews. Doors are at 6 p.m.

Tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations, including the Rockwood Building, on the South Side of campus for $21.50.

Section 202 host Gabrielle and friends go over some sports that aren’t in the sports media spotlight often, and review some sports based on their difficulty to play.
