Psychedelic punk dream showcases at Comet Ping Pong

Even with a citywide snow emergency in effect, Philadelphia-local band Bleeding Rainbow played Comet Ping Pong on Feb. 12.

Bleeding Rainbow, comprised of talented trio Sarah Everton, Rob Garcia and Al Creedon, create music that takes you back to the better days of teenage-hood.

The area of the restaurant normally dedicated to ping pong tournaments was transformed into a stage and music venue, with walls covered in illustrations and gig posters from Comet’s past events.

As soon as the band walked onto stage, Bleeding Rainbow transformed Comet’s ambiance into an oasis of psychedelic punk shoegaze. The groups started with one of their older songs “White Noise,” filling the venue with distorted riffs alongside subtle yet beautiful melodies.

This young punk group played tracks “Tell Me” and “So You Know” from their newest album “Interrupt” released this month with Brooklyn-based Kanine Records. They followed-up with popular hits “Pink Ruff” and “Get Lost” from their previous 2012 album, appropriately named “Yeah Right”, keeping the punk image alive. Bleeding Rainbow’s surreal energy overpowered Comet Ping Pong, making the snowstorm all the less formidable.

Attendees of the show at Comet Ping Pong were not only graced with the presence of talented Bleeding Rainbow, but also stoner-metal bands Dudes and Hunters who made the night unexpectedly entertaining with the Dudes’ cover of “Shoes” – the viral YouTube video about a girl called Kelly who just wanted to buy some shoes, and boys kept telling her that it was stupid.

At the end of the show, attendees were able to meet each of the bands while they watched the other touring groups play.

Comet Ping Pong has an intimate experience with the musicians they bring – something that certainly couldn’t happen at 9:30 Club. Getting to chat with your favorite punk band while chowing down on some pizza and a root beer float – what could be better than that?
