Wagshal's, Ruby Tuesday's restaurants open near campus

An American Caf? and a Rolling Stones-inspired restaurant are soon to become part of the AU community of dining services as Wagshal's American Caf? construction nears completion while Ruby Tuesday is tentatively scheduled to open at 4200 Wisconsin Ave. Wagshal's, which is occupying space once owned by Blue Mountain Caf? in the Tunnel, has been undergoing construction since October in preparation for opening this semester.

MLK speakers call for equality

Standing at a "crossroads on the way to equality," as one speaker said, students and faculty came together in Kay Chapel Wednesday to remember the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and pledged to work for social justice in his memory. The Commemorative Ceremony featured speeches by AU President Benjamin Ladner, student leaders, a performance by AU's gospel choir and a candlelight ceremony.

Activists mobilize against Bush

In a mass-mobilization effort reminiscent of last spring's IMF/World Bank protests, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of downtown D.C. Saturday to challenge the fanfare for George W. Bush, the nation's 43rd president. Early in the day, protesters gathered at loosely organized locations along the inaugural parade route, shouting and toting signs supporting a myriad of agendas.

Men's Swimming wins fourth straight

The Eagles continued their undefeated season on Saturday with a 125.5-111.5 victory over East Carolina during Senior Day at Reeves Athletic Complex. Saturday was the Eagles final home match as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. Ethan Bassett led the Eagles with two victories in the 1,000m and the 500m freestyle events.

Homecoming court selection arrives

"Action Through the Ages" is the theme of this year's homecoming celebration, which will be held February 18-24. The highlights include men's and women's basketball games, a fashion show and silent auction in the tavern, a block party on the quad and the Founders Day Ball.

Chemical weapons not found

The Army Corps of Engineers found no chemical warfare agents during an excavation on campus this month, but results of soil tests for further arsenic contamination are pending and expected to reveal further arsenic contamination. Between Jan. 8 and 11, engineers removed 55-gallon barrels of soil within a 55-meter radius of the excavation pit behind the Hamilton and Kreeger buildings.

AU drops seven over winter break

The Eagles (3-13, 1-4) played straight through the AU's winter break, while most of the student body relaxed. The team eventually broke their eight-game losing streak half way through January. In their first game after the break, the Eagles dropped a road game against James Madison 71-60.

D.C. students use AU more than suspected

Though AU students spend a great deal of time complaining about their lack of library resources, other schools in the area seem more than happy to use Bender Library as a supplement to their studies. The library is in a strong position as a center for research and information, according to University Librarian Patricia Wand.

Sunny Day Real Estate

Before addressing Sunny Day Real Estate's newest creation, let's take a moment to speculate. Why is the band's fourth album titled "The Rising Tide?" Is it a homage to the mystery and sublime nature of the ocean - which, using one' s imagination, could be a metaphor for love, one of frontman Jeremy Enigh's favorite subjects? Is it a veiled reference to the sad state of problems in the world, which Enigh also addresses in his songs? Or does it just allude to the odd fashion of the emo music scene (in which Sunny Day Real Estate is popular), where high-water pants are all the rage? Perhaps the first two speculations are correct, but the third is doubtful - Sunny Day's melancholy music doesn't leave much room for humor, and "The Rising Tide" is its most despondent album yet.

Men's soccer defeats Ivy League team

The AU men's soccer team had a superb outing against U. Penn yesterday, posting a decisive 4-1 victory at home. The Eagles' midfielders and forwards were a commanding presence throughout the game, and defenders Larry McDonald, a sophomore, and Brett Colton, a junior, anchored the back line.

Bumpy roads ahead for traffic violators

Starting later this year, the Metropolitan Police Department will expand its already successful Automated Photo Enforcement program to use cameras to catch speeders. The goal of the program, according to the MPD, is to reduce crashes, injuries, and deaths related to traffic violations.

The student, who - under contractual obligation with CBS - must maintain anonymity for the next week or more while he and 24 other finalists await the producers' decision, says he is "extremely nervous.
