Is activism the answer?

·

On my way to Subway the other day, the rants and raves of a multitude of protesters emanated from Farragut Square Park, but one in particular caught my ear. I looked up to see a sandal-clad, pony tail-haired, ripped cargo shorts-sporting hippie kid appearing from an alleyway.

All thumbs: Advice for freshmen

Thumbs Up Get off the red line ... D.C. is a fun city with tons to do, so make sure you do it. We live in one of the nicest parts of the District, but while the allure of Tenleytown is tempting the real joy of D.C. lies elsewhere. Make sure to get involved in the city's celebrations, including the internationally-reknowned spring Cherry Blossom festival.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor: Seth Johnson's line of reasoning that a liberal should not have an opinion on who becomes the next pope is specious at best. The U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted the First Amendment to require a "wall of separation" between church and state; thus it not only prohibits government from adopting an official denomination or religion, but requires government to avoid excessive involvement in religion.

A salute to the best of England's crown jewel

It turns out that London, the tea-drinking capital of the Western world, really shares more in common with a cup of coffee. Coffee is an acquired taste, often a bitter one, but it's full of enough heart-starting bliss to make anyone an addict after one cup.

Opinion: No good reason to oppose estate tax

The problem with writing about something like the estate tax is that sane people have no way to respond. Let's say somebody walks up to you and says "I want to repeal the estate tax." Most people, being relatively sane, will respond with "What the hell? Why?" Then, when they realize that the repealer is serious, they'll start ranting.

No more political bickering

To say that the past nine months have been anything short of incredible in the political world would not give the time period justice. Highlighted by one of the most anticipated elections of all time, in the se nine months we have witnessed history over and over again.

Staff editorial: Difference between discussion and bias

The College Republicans are seeking President Ladner's attention in the ongoing debate over professor bias in the classroom. The group plans to deliver a letter signed by concerned students that asks to have the issue addressed on teacher evaluations. While in the classroom, students can sometimes feel intimidated by professors and their viewpoints.

Opinion: Four unforgettable years at AU

In four years like no other, we, the seniors of AU, were there. Imagine yourself a member of the class of 1967, just as many of our parents were: a college class that defined a generation. Upon arrival in 1963, the Kennedy administration was the grand summation for what lay ahead than what might have been.

'Death' descends on D.C.

Don't show up at Tuesday's Death From Above 1979 gig at the Black Cat in socks and sandals, the band's T-shirt and badly cut jeans. If you do, singer and drummer Sebastien Grainger may just punch you in the face, but that's merely speculation. He considers the above ensemble to be a "don't," a label commonly doled out by Vice Magazine, an edgy publication housed by the band's record label.

Opinion: Azerbaijan must work for WTO membership

Like many other countries, Azerbaijan is considering becoming a member of World Trade Organization. But the road to the WTO membership can be long and difficult. Azerbaijan has to think about its competitive advantage in today's global world, and compare cost and benefits of becoming a WTO member.

Staff editorial: The Eagle's advice for incoming SC officers

Every year following the annual transition of Student Government (formerly Student Confederation) officers, The Eagle reflects on its own experiences in covering AU's student government and makes suggestions to the new SG officers. It is hoped that by considering what we have observed, they will rise to the challenges of the summer and coming academic year.

Opinion: Facts don't take sides in debate

Students may have noticed the blue and pink flags that took up a perfectly good sunbathing area on the Quad last Thursday. These flags were part of the "Cemetery of the Innocents" that was sponsored by AU Students for Life. Each flag signified one of the 4,000 lives that are lost each day through abortion.

Opinion: Evolution more than a theory

It is indeed true that we attend a private institution and thus are released from forcibly separating church doctrine from state enterprises. However, as a paying student of this University, we are entitled to a certain standard of academic integrity, which excludes Biblical references as credible scientific sources.

Opinion: Anti-meat side chock full of inaccuracies

In the past couple of weeks I have been exposed to the constant onslaught of vegetarian health claims and campaigns on the AU campus. Day after day I see signs and tables on the Quad, changes in the TDR daily menu and editorials in The Eagle hammering the ideals of vegetarians into the minds of all AU students.
