Staff editorial: In memory: Chris Salazar 1983-2005

The AU campus has been deeply shaken by news of the death of Chris Salazar who, throughout his four years here, was arguably more recognizable a figure on campus than most student leaders, professors or administrators. Sunday morning's fatal fall ended a life defined by individuality, passion and empathy.

Thumbs up... Dalai Lama in DC... The Tibetan spiritual leader came to town again last week. Give peace a chance, eh? Veteran's Day... Thanks to all the current/former service members out there. We wouldn't have the freedom to write this paper without you.

Opinion

True academic integrity cuts in both directions

Wouldn't you find it ridiculous if the department of performing arts publicly criticized John Edwards' plan to end poverty? Or if the department of audio technology held a talk on campus about how eating McDonalds is bad for your health? Or if the department of economics were to hold an event criticizing India for claiming Kashmir as Indian territory and not part of Pakistan? I know I would find it, at the very least, a bit strange.

Staff editorial: Board of trustees: close, but no cigar

The board met last Thursday in an open forum with students and faculty. The aim was to make the transition process more transparent, but it was apparent that wounds still run deep over the departure of former president Benjamin Ladner. While we understand and share many of the concerns of the campus community, we feel it is immature to continue to complain about the Ladner saga.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, I was thoroughly disturbed by the column, "Religious roots run deep," printed Nov. 7.ÿThe entire premise, that America is solely a Christian nation, is elitist and bigoted. When Haun speaks of "our commonly shared values" or "our faith", it is obvious that he speaks about Christians and no one else, despite the author's reluctance in plainly saying so.

Corrections

In the Nov. 7 article, "Four UC students sentenced to jail," The Eagle incorrectly referred to the University of California Chico. Chico is a school in the California State University system, not part of the University of California system. In an Oct. 31 article about DCist.

Change has its costs, but status quo is worse

I would like to address the concerns of one of my readers, who In his letter to the editor published Nov, 4 he stated that "The only way, the board of trustees can be changed is through an act of Congress" and further admonishes students "to lobby our representatives" so that AU "can fix the fundamental flaws that [I] refuse to acknowledge need fixing.

Staff editorial: "Girlcott" offensive, disgusting t-shirts

A group of high school girls in Pittsburgh organized a boycott, or as they called it, a "girlcott," of pricy clothing retailer Abercrombie and Fitch because of t-shirts the group deemed demeaning towards women. The story has gained national attention, with the girls being interviewed by Katie Couric on the "Today Show.

Staff editorial: Google Print offers books sans library

Internet beheamoth Google, which offers services such as GMail, Google Earth, and a picture editing service, Picassa, has found another niche to carve out for itself: books. For those of you who loathe treking to the library, Google now enables you to search for a book and topic, and then browse the relevant parts of the book.

Stay on message, AU demands board reform

Dear Students, As the Board of Trustees meets today, I felt it important to speak to the campus community. I am writing to reassure you that your student government is doing all it can to effectively advocate for you with the board of trustees. The decision to give now ex-President Ladner $3.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, Will Haun's statement in his November 7th column that "history shows that Christian values are at the heart of America's founding fathers, documents, law and influences" is startlingly absurd. When thinking of the founding fathers, perhaps Haun forgot that George Washington was a Deist and actually refused to see a priest on his deathbed.

Staff editorial: Drinking ignorance leads to death, jail

Four brothers of Chi Tau fraternity at the University of California-Chico were sentenced to jail after pleading guilty for the drinking-related death in February of one of their members, making a gross statement about the irresponsibility of college. students While at a party, the now deceased student drank excessive amounts of alcohol, and was given too much water by his brothers.

Religious roots run deep

America was founded on the values of the Jesuit Christian faith, and those that try and shut that out of American culture does so at the peril of the nation. History shows that Christian values are at the heart of America's founding fathers, documents, laws, and influences.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, This article is not about the ethics of the ex-president of American University but it is rather about the ethical dimensions revolving around what one might call "Ladner-gate." Pens whose ink was paid by Ladner were competing to tear him apart once he became officially the scapegoat of a political affair that will always remain behind closed boards.

Staff editorial: Facebook expression is no place for hate

A student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh has been disciplined by the school for starting a Facebook group against the gay-straight alliance at the private Catholic institution, a right he absolutely holds, but executed in repulsive, if not atrocious, taste.

The Eagle
Opinion

AU students: grow up!

Everyone else has put in his two cents on Ladnergate, so I suppose that I might as well do the same. Blame it on the uninteresting news cycle. Winston Churchill - and a lot of others since - once said, "Show me a young conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart.

Staff editorial: Fired up about smoking in D.C.

The ban on smoking in restaurants and bars in the District is all but assured, and passions are ignited on both sides. Smokers are understandably upset that their ability to blow smoke is being fanned out by others. Some non-smokers are upset that they have to cough through a meal and leave smelling like they were smoking themselves.
