Guillermo del Toro loves creatures. From the Pale Man in “Pan’s Labyrinth” to the titular character of “Hellboy,” his films have become famous for their inhuman characters. Now, del Toro thinks it is time to give some love back to his creatures.
It’s a pretty common thing today for young adult (YA) novels to get a silver screen adaptation. It makes sense; the most prominent movie-going demographic, according to the MPAA 2015 Theatrical Statistics Summary, are young people ages 12 to 17. Young adults who are loyal to a franchise basically guarantee the studio an audience for their film, meaning easy revenue.
One has to wonder if all of Tim Burton’s movies take place in a shared universe. They at least have a shared aesthetic and Burton’s latest film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, based off of the Ransom Riggs novel of the same name, is slathered in it. However, the characteristic wackiness becomes the only feature of interest.
