“Liberal Arts” is an annoyingly unoriginal and pretentious film that fools you into thinking you might learn something in the end. It shows the failed endeavors of a stunted man trying to recapture his youth, perhaps revealing a little too closely the unrealistic mindset of actor-director Josh Radnor (“How I Met Your Mother,” “Happythankyoumoreplease”).

Navigating the more arts-based organizations on campus can be difficult, especially when they are outnumbered by the equally important but more abundant political clubs and activism organizations. So if you are into music, dance or anything entertainment-based, the Scene offers a comprehensive guide to AU’s arts and entertainment organizations.

D.C. is no Broadway, but that does not mean that the average theater buff is at a loss for options. Quite the opposite, in fact. D.C. has a colorful and ever-growing theater community, and it is not centered around the famed Kennedy Center. From the unorthodox to the Shakespearean, The Scene offers you a preview of the upcoming plays at some of the area’s best theaters.

There’s something innately romantic about living in the city. The bustling crowds, the “hip” neighborhoods, the freedom to enjoy your youth without the constraints of parental authority.

When “The Bourne Identity” first came out in theaters in 2002, it introduced a new type of action hero. Gone was the suave, debonair class of James Bond. Jason Bourne was a gritty, morally ambiguous and ruthless killer who ushered in a new age of modern action films, fitting for the disillusionment of the post-9/11 era.

Movies have been trying to answer the question of whether men and women can be friends for years. But rarely do they find it. “Celeste and Jesse Forever” approaches this question in reverse, focusing on a divorcing couple trying to stay best friends. While we may never know the answer, the result is a funny, honest and real movie about two people who just weren’t meant to be.

In the midst of election madness, it wouldn’t be long before Hollywood swooped in to capitalize on the frenzy of politics. This came in the form of the timely comedy “The Campaign,” starring Will Ferrell (“The Other Guys”) and Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover 2”).

It’s tough playing the best friend. People often take you for granted, even though you consistently keep up with comedy greats like Amy Poehler or hold your own in an award-winning film like “The Social Network.”

It’s a classic boy-meets-girl scenario. Boy meets girl, girl falls in love with boy, boy lives happily ever after. If it sounds like something’s missing; it’s because the girl doesn’t exist. At least, not outside the mind of her creator or the collective imagination of the audience. She is only there to serve one purpose: to make the boy more real.

Weighed down by pretentious drama and its classic literature roots, “Trishna” is a magnificent bore of a film, despite its stunning cinematography and intriguing inversion of a tragic love story.

“Snow White and the Huntsman” has all the elements of a good medieval fantasy movie: a richly imagined world, breathtaking CGI, a dazzlingly good-looking cast. Only there’s something off.

Nearly 10 years after the last film, “Men in Black 3” crawls into theaters, riding on the hopes of some leftover good will toward Will Smith and the “Men in Black” franchise.

In lieu of all the dark and grim movies this summer season seems to be offering, it’s nice to see a movie that embraces escapism like “The Avengers.”

Summer of 2012 looks to be one of the most epic and grand scale movie seasons to come around in a while. But beneath all the explosions and hype, it’s easy to gloss over some of the lesser-known films that deserve just as much attention as the next blockbuster. The Scene offers a compilation of the best of both big-budget films and lesser-known flicks.

“Friends with Kids” talks a lot but says very little. It’s extremely charming and quirky, with one of the best comedic casts to grace our screens, but it comes across like a more somber version of “When Harry Met Sally,” complete with snappy dialogue and great chemistry.
