With no front-runners or serious contenders in the running, this year's Academy Awards race is marked with disappointment. Typically, at this point in the season, studios release their most award-friendly films - either starring a deglamorized Halle Berry as a struggling mother or a kitchen sink sob-fest. To that extent, 2007 seems no different than any other year.

Wednesday marked a pivotal step forward for music as an art form, courtesy of Radiohead. The U.K. band released its much-anticipated album, "In Rainbows," with an unexpected marketing twist. Typically, modern music is leaked weeks and even months before the album is officially released, mostly through illegal means, when record labels and PR firms send music to publications to be reviewed. With "In Rainbows," this was not the case. At exactly midnight on Wednesday, the album was released online as an MP3 download. It marked the first time in years that the music community - critics, pirates and fans alike - collectively experienced a musical phenomenon.

The ideology that less is more in the sphere of music is a dying belief. Not to knock artists who favor recording albums that rival feature film time lengths, but there is something truly commendable about albums that accomplish what others do in less than 40 minutes. This week, in the tradition of in "High Fidelity," we decided to reward the select artists who have mastered the fine art of minimalism in the 2000s.

The Westboro Baptist Church, centered in Topeka, Kansas and headed by Fred Phelps, is comprised of some 80 devout followers, 80 percent of whom are related. The church has been in existence for 16 years and has recently encountered a spike in media attention within the past few months as a result of the members' reactions to recent tragedies such as Sept.11, 2001, Hurricane Katrina and now, the Virginia Tech school shootings. The actions of the church are upsetting citizens throughout the nation, including numerous students here at American University.

This past Friday, the suspenseful film "Vacancy" hit theaters. The film, which stars Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, chronicles the misadventures of a bickering couple on the verge of divorce whose car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and is forced to stay at a shady motel. Moments after the two enter their room, they discover that they are trapped and have hidden cameras aimed at them filming their every move. In the tradition of "Hostel" and "Saw", the couple must fight back to make it out of the room alive.
