Op-Ed: On Fossil Fuels, Trustees Can’t Be Trusted

(01/28/15 10:15pm)

The last semester of Fossil Free AU’s campaign drew immense power from students telling their stories of the climate crisis. These deeply personal stories--of oil disaster in Mississipi, of rising seas in Florida, of fracked communities in Pennsylvania--rooted us in our fight for climate justice. Though these narratives remind us why we must push our institutions to divest from the fossil fuel industry, understanding individual stories will never be enough if we want to take meaningful action in response to the climate crisis.

Op/Ed: Walk out and walk forward (towards a Fossil Free AU)

(04/21/14 8:49pm)

Eighteen months ago, the Fossil Free AU campaign kicked off on AU’s campus as part of a nation-wide movement. Since then, the campaign has worked tirelessly with both the student body and University administrators to accomplish one goal: a commitment from AU to divest its endowment from the fossil fuel industry within five years.

Op/ed: KPU Speakers Should Reflect American University Values

(04/02/14 12:17am)

We are writing on behalf of students who took action at the Kennedy Political Union’s Dick Cheney event and others on campus who are disgusted and outraged that KPU used student money to bring this individual to AU. KPU provides a valuable service to students by showcasing speakers from across the political spectrum. We recognize the importance of respecting a range of political viewpoints and highlighting voices that might not represent the political majority at AU. What we cannot accept is providing a platform to those whose political careers are built on positions and policies that undermine the mission and values of this University.
