DCist was once the central source of news for many D.C. locals. But on Feb. 23, WAMU — an NPR-affiliate station owned by American University, which bought DCist in 2018 — announced that it was shutting down the online news site and laying off 15 employees. According to the station’s general manager, this change was to shift its focus toward more audio production rather than digital news.

During my first year at American University, I ran a radio show for WVAU from 1 to 2 a.m. on Monday nights. After an hour of blasting music in the studio, I would take a deep breath and start the eerie, albeit short, walk from the studio in Mary Graydon Center to Centennial Hall.

Enrolling in summer courses should be an experience that doesn’t break students’ bank for aiming to further their education. American University does not provide this experience.
Fall 2022 was a rough semester for American University Kitchen.
The concept for the American University Experience courses was introduced in 2015, and the first AUx course was implemented into the curriculum for first-year students in 2018. Since 2018, the AUx1 and AUx2 courses have been both criticized and celebrated. However, the courses still leave students wondering if AUx is a class that is worth their time. Is it really accomplishing all that the University claims it does?
Last semester, 11 fire alarms went off in the Centennial, Anderson and Letts Halls complex. According to emails that students received after alarms, more than half were intentional pulls, meaning that someone pulled the physical fire alarm and smoke did not cause the alert. Not only are these constant fire alarms annoying, but they make the living environment in the residence halls unsustainable for students’ livelihoods.
