The American University volleyball team (20-8, 10-6) closed out their regular season with a five-set loss to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (15-12, 8-8) on Nov. 16. The team held a pregame ceremony to celebrate the careers of its three graduating seniors: setter Esma Sipahi, defensive specialist Bridget Javitch and middle blocker Lilou Stegeman.

American University’s volleyball season has been full of positives, and now the Eagles are on the hunt for the Patriot League tournament title. They are currently ranked #3 in the standings, trailing Colgate and Bucknell, and have clinched a home game in the first round of the tournament against whoever is the sixth seed.

As second-year defenseman Lev Belopolsky attempted to skate out of his third of the ice, he watched the puck he had just cleared. Stopping just below the blue line dividing American University’s third of the ice with the neutral zone, he saw a teammate mishandle the puck, giving it back to the University of Maryland Terrapins without a fight. Frustrated, Belopolsky put his elbows on his knees and released an exasperated exploitative loud enough that the stand crowded with Maryland fans could hear.

For most people, graduating high school indicates it’s time to “hang ‘em up,” as the obligation to play a sport and the access to do so simultaneously fade. The barrier of entry for adult sports tends to alienate newcomers and favor lifelong players, effectively putting athletic experimentation out of reach beyond the teenage years.

A week ago, I would have told you that American University’s field hockey season was headed in the wrong direction, but after wins over Lafayette College and the University of Pennsylvania, the Eagles are back on the right track. The losses for American seemed to be piling up at the beginning of the season, opening with a record of 2-4. It is important to keep in mind, however, that three of those four losses were in overtime, including against Virginia, who was ranked third in the country at the time.

The American University women’s soccer team (4-3-2) fell to the Bucknell Bison (6-3-2) 3-1 on Sept. 25, leaving the Eagles 0-2-1 in the Patriot League.
