American University hired Duane Simpkins to take men’s basketball to a higher level. The way the season started last year — beating teams that they were expected to beat, like Siena, and losing to the better teams, like Villanova — was a good sign. It showed that the team knew how to win and wasn’t folding under the new coach.

Growing up with a single mother and a father in Ireland, Danny Noone, first-line center for American University club ice hockey and Kogod School of Business junior, has never been in a financially stable environment. This never stopped him from falling in love with ice hockey, an expensive youth sport. Throughout Noone’s youth hockey career, his mother financially supported him; however, now in college, he’s on his own.

Jake Crim knew this injury was different from the moment it happened during a routine game with his team, Stumptown AC, in 2021. In an innocent backpedal run, it was barely noticeable to the untrained eye that Crim had tripped over his own feet. He hit the ground almost immediately, curled in a ball and grasping at his ankle.

After an unexpected first year of college spent sitting in his room listening to endless requests from professors to turn on his Zoom camera, Michael Picchi, a 2024 alum of the School of Public Affairs, was itching for a ball between his cleats, teammates to cheer on and a chance to try out for the team he had been following on Instagram all pandemic long. AU men’s club soccer, or AUFC, was the perfect opportunity to revive his soccer career, one of his lifelong passions.

American University volleyball head coach Ahen Kim remembers the moment he decided Bella Marrero was going to be a part of his team. It was the Girls Junior National Championships in Baltimore in 2023. This was the second time he had seen her play that year, and Kim was so impressed that he asked her to come to American’s volleyball camp after nationals.

The American University volleyball team (20-9, 10-7) lost to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (16-12, 9-8) in five sets during their Patriot League quarterfinal match on Nov. 19 in Bender Arena. This game marks the Eagles’ fifth straight loss to end the year, with both of their final two coming at the hands of Lehigh in five sets.

This year’s American men’s basketball roster features four freshmen: Wyatt Nausadis, Shane O’Reilly, Eric Michaels and Julen Iturbe. While each of these players will look to make an impact on a veteran-heavy team that is predicted to finish second in the Patriot League, they will also look to set a new direction for the future of AU basketball. This year’s freshman class is the first that head coach Duane Simpkins was able to bring in based on his recruiting priorities.

The American University men’s basketball team (1-4) fell to #10 ranked University of North Carolina Tar Heels (2-1) 107-55 in Chapel Hill on Nov. 15.
The Eagles faced their most high-profile matchups of the season against one of college basketball’s powerhouse programs, playing in the Dean E. Smith Dome in front of almost 20,000 fans. This starkly contrasts with the atmosphere of Bender Arena, which holds just over 3,000 spectators.

It’s Oct. 28, 2023. The American University Eagles are visiting Boston University for a Patriot League field hockey contest, their final game of the regular season. In the third quarter, the Eagles lead 1-0, and looking to extend that lead, freshman midfielder Emilia Winkler dishes the ball to her teammate at the goalpost. Her teammate taps the ball past the goalkeeper and the Eagles are up 2-0. Immediately, the team swarms the goalscorer, jumping and cheering.

The American University volleyball team (20-7, 10-5) lost two matches on the weekend of Nov. 9, dropping a 3-1 match to the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (10-14, 8-7), and a 3-2 match to the Navy Midshipmen (6-18, 6-9) on Nov. 10.
