The Eagle’s editorial board is comprised of its staff but does not represent every individual staffer’s views. Rather, it provides an insight into how The Eagle, as an editorially-independent institution, responds to issues on campus.

Journalist Lewis Raven Wallace once wrote: “Objectivity is dead, and I’m okay with it.” In the classroom, students will often complain about having professors with different views than them. The responsibility of a university includes ensuring the safety and protection of its students. However, marginalized populations at American University are continuously let down by an administration that places its own comfort and discretion over issues of discrimination. AU’s Discrimination and Non-Title IX Sexual Misconduct Policy sidesteps this critical role of safety and protection in its lack of procedures that meaningfully prioritize marginalized students’ experiences of discrimination.

In the year since the horrific break-in and sexual assault in Leonard Hall on Oct. 31, 2022, the American University administration has blatantly disregarded calls to action from organizers and students. In the aftermath of this tragic event, over 1,400 students signed a letter to President Burwell demanding five actions be taken to protect survivors of sexual violence. It’s been a year, and we have yet to see any of the five actions implemented, despite the resounding demand by the student body.

On Oct. 3 at 11:59 p.m., I sat in my bedroom with bated breath. In a few moments, I would enter a new era of my life — a prospect that was both enchanting and terrifying. Much like Cinderella, I looked at the clock as it tolled to midnight, waiting for the fairytale transformation.

For some of us, we were submitting last-minute applications, hoping to meet the January deadlines. Some others had submitted our applications months ago, aiming to be one of the few accepted into coveted early action and early decision spots. I fell into the latter category. Days before my senior year winter break, I awaited 7 p.m., when Columbia University would release its decision. By 7:02 p.m., I had been rejected.

Living off-campus is a rite of passage for many college students. While off-campus living may be a step towards independence, American University has an obligation to their off-campus students that goes beyond the support they are currently giving, especially in times of crisis or displacement.

Accessible public transit should be a right, not a privilege for D.C. residents. Making city bus fares free not only gives low-income D.C. residents, students and tourists the ability to ride without the looming worry of compounding costs, but it also incentivizes the use of public transit as a whole.
