I can no longer serve as a student worker at American University and its School of International Service, as the current administration has repeatedly suppressed my attempts to advocate for basic human rights. Recent statements and policies issued by the Office of the President reflect an ongoing effort to censor students and faculty trying to speak for Palestinians. I am also not comfortable working for a school dedicated to “international service” that cannot uniformly condemn the genocide, ethnic cleansing and collective punishment of the Palestinian people.

Most of my mornings start with checking the news online. Among the outlets I read are the major publications such as the Associated Press, the New York Times and the Washington Post, but when it comes to local news, DCist has always been the first place I look. Imagine my surprise when I woke up on Feb. 23 to see that DCist had been permanently shut down.

The Eagle’s editorial board is comprised of its staff but does not represent every individual staffer’s views. Rather, it provides an insight into how The Eagle, as an editorially-independent institution, responds to issues on campus.
