After 20 years in Afghanistan, the U.S. has finally ended its longest war with a difficult withdrawal that gave way to a complete Taliban takeover. The U.S. promised to help thousands of Afghan allies and those who worked and supported the U.S. government in fleeing the country. Now, tens of thousands of Afghans are coming to the U.S. Among these are university students and adults who want to get ahead. Why hasn't American University put out any statement in support of refugees relocating to the DMV?

All signs pointed towards the Washington Mystics having a redemption season this year, following a 2020 derailed by injuries and COVID-19 opt-outs, but this season instead leaves them in danger of missing the playoffs altogether.

On Sept. 7, antisemitic graffiti was found carved into the wall of a communal bathroom in Anderson Hall. When I first heard of this, my initial reaction was not fear, but exhaustion.

There is little conversation about disability at American University. The only classes that engage with this subject are waitlisted because they fulfill the Habits of Mind requirements. There are still very few supplemental classes for students who are truly interested and affected by these issues.

After a painstaking waiting period, I finally got to call my parents to tell them the good news: I was accepted to a summer internship program. Seconds after confirming my participation, I emailed my advisor to register my unpaid internship for credit. My excitement quickly diminished, however, when she informed me that I would have to pay American University thousands of dollars to receive credit for my unpaid labor.

The mid-semester residential experience at American University was filled with spitting in tubes, room capacity restrictions and daily self-screenings. Classes were online and friends were spread across the globe. Only some students ever made it to campus at the end of the spring semester.

A Boston University study published this past February found that depression and anxiety amongst U.S. college students has reached an all-time high. These results are not particularly shocking considering the pandemic and the general unrest in this country combined with the usual financial, emotional and mental toll that college enrollment takes on the average student.

Being berated for our choices as consumers can feel irritating and overwhelming. It’s uncomfortable to assess the weight of our decisions when all we truly want out of a transaction is our desired good or service. That is why it’s easy to brush off conscious shopping practices as performative or meaningless.

As of late, it has become very common to blame the big corporations for the deadly reality of climate change. Needless to say, they do have an immeasurable influence on the way our future is looking. We all know we are not headed in a good direction. Yet, the question of who gives power to those corporations is not often brought to light . We seem to ignore the fact that we, the consumers, are the ones giving corporations power to destroy our future. What would happen if we all decided to really change the way we consume? We have the power to affect necessary change, but, in order to do so, we need to acknowledge that we are all part of the problem.

My freshman year has come to a close. I wish more than anything that it was a whole year in person, rather than just a few fleeting weeks. Even though they’ve been online, I’ve generally liked most of my classes. Most, but not all.

Internships are an integral part of the American college experience. At American University, that importance is magnified given our location, our signature ‘Wonk Culture’ and the type of student the University attracts. The impact that the coronavirus has caused on the internship scene in 2020 cannot be understated, but what is not yet known is how long this impact will last. Now that workplaces and students alike have tested the remote internship model, we can speculate on whether or this format will become standard practice, and evaluate its pros and cons.

“Cancel culture” exposes our complicated relationship with moral purity, shame, accountability, sensitivity, ostracism and ignorance. The relationship between “cancel culture” and consumerism is an important thing for us to discuss. When handled with care, dialogue pertaining to this phenomenon can be enlightening and fruitful.

It’s feeling like spring here in D.C. The cherry blossoms have bloomed. The quad is filled up with frisbees, spikeball nets and students with open laptops trying to take in the fresh air. The sun is coming out behind grey clouds. Yet, things aren’t normal. We are still wearing masks and social distancing. Most of us are desperate for the vaccine, because we can’t return to normal without it. Our summer won’t be the same until we have herd immunity.

As American University Student Government elections pass, it has officially been one of the two times I’ve heard from them this year. Countless candidates posted their platforms during the fall election season and explained why I should vote for them. Two semesters later, I have no idea if any of their policy ideas became reality.

Until last week, I had no real opinion on AUSG. What I do know is this: AUSG is a glorified advocacy group that you are elected to join. Yes, it’s true, they do some good work, but at the end of the day, AUSG has no real power on campus. It’s basically a club that we pay for via our student activity fee in charge of advocating on behalf of all of us. I was a part of student council in high school, so I admired their passion and their dedication to govern their peers. I know that student government in high school and college are different, but I felt that I could relate to them a little bit. However, I was shocked to find out that most AUSG members are paid.
