American University’s Student Government has been a broken institution for a long time. Often, students begin at the Senate and Executive branch with initial high hopes for student body advocacy but leave disillusioned at the inefficacy of the organization. Under the current administration, these sentiments have only grown stronger.

It’s no news that American University is expensive. The 2021-2022 cost of attendance is $50,542, a price higher than the national average cost of tuition, which is $41,281.

It has become a joke between American University students to talk about how TDR workers will greet them with fury and scream at them from time to time. The workers are typically described as rude, impatient and intimidating. There’s a push-button feedback device in the dining hall now, asking “Did we make you feel welcome today?”

A scholarship: the thing that can make or break a student’s ability to go to college. To win one, a student typically must write essays detailing their life that makes them stand out.

I am no stranger to the cold and I often find the D.C. winter to be warm in comparison to my central New York childhood. However, I do wince as I feel the striking mid-Atlantic winter wind as I walk across the parking lot from my dorm hall in East Campus to go to the nearest and only coronavirus testing site on campus.

I remember the day I decided to apply to American University as a transfer student.

We are all familiar with the term “traditional college experience” and how almost every college student is under pressure to attain it. Many people begin college with the expectation that it will be the best four years of their lives due to how often they hear it from others. However, many are disappointed after seeing college is nothing like the romanticized version.

Have you ever walked past Cassell Hall and Leonard Hall? Or walked inside Anderson Hall then over to Letts Hall? Ever notice a difference? You’re not the only one.

It’s Black History Month and, ironically, I feel my Black history has been erased by American University, a predominantly white institution.

Since I began at American University, I have only heard bad things about the AU Counseling Center, ranging from inconvenient scheduling times to refusing treatment. I have watched many close friends reach out for help with the Counseling Center and are left to deal with their issues on their own.

There is no place like American University in the winter. Our beautiful campus and the surrounding Spring Valley, Tenleytown and Palisades neighborhoods are layered with sheets of snow, bringing forth scenes of seasonal fun. While wintertime may seem exciting inside the friendly confines of our campus gates, for many in D.C. the coming of winter means a season of shivering nights, with no shelter from the freezing temperatures. For D.C.’s unhoused civilians, cold winters are some of the many difficult and traumatic experiences they may experience.

For almost two years, the coronavirus pandemic has altered countless lives. For many, the normal “college experience” has been uprooted by online classes, online semesters and COVID-19 testing. These are precautions necessary to sustain the safety of the scholastic and outer communities, but at American University, weekly testing is not mandated.

Depending on a student's experience with financing their education, they may or may not know of the term scholarship displacement. This practice consists of financial aid offices reducing federal and university awarded aid after students report outside scholarships to their university.

American University President Sylvia Burwell sent an email to the student body on Dec. 29 that would change the start of the spring 2022 semester — a move to an online modality for the month of January.

Protesting is a popular activity for American University students. Whether it be climate change, unfair pay or immigration policies, AU students are quick to craft a handmade poster with a witty pun and stand outside for hours. Perhaps that’s why we are ranked the most politically active student body by The Princeton Review.

Picture this: you have an 8:10 a.m. class. The professor ends on time, so you get out at 9:25. Your next class starts at 9:45. That’s plenty of time to walk across campus, right? Yes, but not if you’re going to the Spring Valley Building. The 20-minute break between classes is barely enough time to make it from Kerwin to Spring Valley. If your professor holds you for an extra three minutes, you will almost definitely be late to class.

As a desk receptionist (DR), I’ve noticed familiar faces are increasingly disappearing from the front desks of residence halls. It’s time to talk about this unfortunate phenomenon and what the directors of Housing and Residence Life (HRL) can do to preserve my fellow remaining DRs and improve our working conditions.
