American University advertises itself as a creator of changemakers. Despite this, AU fails to acknowledge that many of its students become changemakers as a result of demanding basic action from the University. This pattern of student action in the face of University inaction is extremely present in the previous and current administration’s handling of sexual violence on campus. Through its inaction, AU pushes survivors to advocate for change with no regard for the emotional strain and reliving of trauma that such organizing can cause.

Headline after headline covering the midterm election ask the same question: what happened to the red wave? The answer is young voters.

Housing is essential to every part of life. Safe and stable housing allows a person to thrive and have a comforting place to return to. This is especially true for college students. College is filled with fast-paced and ever-changing schedules that students must adapt to quickly. Stress about housing should never have to be on a college student’s mind. Housing should be the one place a student can go to feel comfortable in their hectic lives. Unfortunately, for many American University students, especially upperclassmen, housing has become another stressor in their already stressful lives.

Before I began attending American University, I was ecstatic to study at a school that so proudly claimed to condemn discrimination and advocate for its minority students. As a current sophomore and member of AU’s minority population, however, I have come to recognize that the prideful advocacy by the administration is often more performative than helpful. AU’s anti- discrimination policies and the Office of Equity and Title IX often fail to take action for students, as they shelve accountability and make empty promises to implement spaces for students of color.

The combined bachelor’s/master’s degree program is confusing. It’s a program offered between American University’s undergraduate and graduate schools, and it has many great perks. However, the process of understanding the rules and regulations required for undergraduate students to participate in the program is far more difficult than it should be. This is due to a lack of clear communication between advisors and students on rules surrounding undergraduate credit limits.

As a resident of American University’s dorm halls, I have noticed the University’s neglect of student facilities. Per the AU’s requirement for freshmen and sophomores, I am also on a meal block plan. Throughout my time at American, it has become clear that Housing and Residence Life not only turns a blind eye but enables and neglects basic student needs in both housing and dining, curbing responsibility and worsening existing insecurity.

As we find ourselves at the mid-semester mark, many freshmen, including myself, are moving past the “honeymoon phase” of the first weeks of college. With this comes the realization that American University, the alleged most liberal university in the U.S., is still a money-hungry, capitalist institution.

I was on the phone with my mom when I learned that a swastika had been graffitied in Anderson Hall. When I alerted my mom to the news, she responded with one word: “Again?”

Students of all walks of life enter the world of higher education, but the playing field is not the same for all. When entering college, every student is confronted with new information they didn’t know before. Much like every system in place in our society, academia has a game that accompanies it — there are rules to follow, cheat codes to use and information to know. Meeting people from different backgrounds becomes a learning experience for everyone on campus, but unfortunately, there are many different pieces of information that some students know and others find out too late.

In 1973, the Roe v. Wade decision protected reproductive rights under the right to privacy. The court split pregnancy into three trimesters, where the pregnant person could decide whether or not to continue the pregnancy during the first trimester. After that, states may regulate abortions in the second or third term as they see fit. However, as many know, this decision did not stick. Those against abortion claimed that the act was against religous beliefs, was murderous, or was morally wrong. These anti-abortion advocates continued to fight for what they believed was right, further dividing parties (and people) within the United States.

There is no question that going to college is hard, but for some college students, the difficulty in accomplishing even the most simple tasks seems insurmountable. Certain tasks, assignments and responsibilities shouldn’t be as taxing as they appear, which is incredibly frustrating. Trying in vain to work on a project, but instead sitting at your computer for hours on end, mind blank or wandering endlessly, is not normal. Wanting to get out of bed and start your day but feeling an invisible barrier preventing you from moving, no matter how much you want to get up, is not normal.

Picture this scenario: imagine a multi-country outbreak of a zoonotic disease occurring and case numbers starting to rise in the city where your college is located. You await an official University response that at least acknowledges the presence of said disease, only to receive emails thanking another million-dollar donation and negligence in drafting a contract with the AU Staff Union. No need to close your eyes to imagine this. This is our current reality.

American University is known for its environmental consciousness, priding itself on being the first university to reach carbon neutrality. AU was recently selected as a 2022 U.S. Department of Education “Green Ribbon Schools'' Post-secondary Sustainability Awardee. Admittedly, AU has taken progressive steps in building sustainability plans to achieve groundbreaking goals and milestones. Yet, the impression of a green campus is a narrow, performative illusion that has overshadowed student efforts in maintaining this image. Students demand and deserve more communication, transparency and support from the administration to breed an environmentally sustainable culture involving all contributors, not just the students alone.
