“Red Band Society” Recap: Love in all shapes and sizes

ALA - THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, FLICKR

Note: This post contains spoilers for season one, episode nine of "Red Band Society," entitled "How Did We Get Here?"

As predicted, things get a bit steamy in the Ocean Park hospital this week. Last week’s episode of “Red Band Society” packs love triangles, one night stands and first times all into one all-over-the-place show.

A world renowned pop star, Delaney Shaw (Bella Thorne, “Big Love”), checks into the hospital for “exhaustion.” However we later learn her hospital visit may have more to do with her pill addiction than the popular celebrity excuse. The singer bargains with Jordi (Nolan Sotillo, “Prom”) for more pills by promising him an audition with her manager. Of course, the meeting never happens. I truly do not understand her placement in tonight’s show. Dash (Astro, “The X Factor”) almost loses his virginity to Shaw, but this also doesn’t happen.

The staff love triangle becomes more complex after Dr. McAndrew (Dave Annable, “Brothers & Sisters”) admits he wants to get back together romantically with Dr. Grace (Mandy Moore, “Tangled”). He says this before awkwardly meeting Dr. Grace’s very attractive, very tall boyfriend in the hospital cafeteria. While drinking his worries away at his usual bar, McAndrew recognizes Nurse Brittany Dobler (Rebecca Rittenhouse, “The Affair”) and saves her from a bad blind date. Of course, they end up in bed together by the end of the night. Brittany is ready to call her boss boyfriend, but Dr. McAndrew cannot get away fast enough.

After lying and cheating on her weigh-in each week, Emma’s faux progress allows her to be dismissed from the hospital. She is definitely not ready to leave and understands this but cannot force herself to tell the truth. On the other hand, Leo, who has made tremendous strides during his physical therapy sessions, is told he must stay a patient a few more weeks, cancer-free. The two part ways at the end of the episode after Leo begs her to stay. She walks away from him.

For an episode entirely devoted to sex and relationships, I expected to be more entertained. Perhaps the glass of white wine I drank before writing this made me sleepy, but overall, “Red Band” left me yawning and bored.

As critics and viewers predicted, FOX has pulled “Red Band” from its schedule. While not yet officially canceled, no episodes will be produced after the thirteenth show. Despite the memories we’ve shared over the last nine weeks, it is time we part ways. It’s not me, it’s definitely you, “Red Band.” The last episode of the series will air this Dec. 3.

Observations/things worth chuckling about:

*For a while, things were getting hot and heavy between Kara (Zoe Levin, “Palo Alto”) and Hunter (Darren Kagasoff, “The Secret Life of The American Teenager”) in a bathroom stall until Nurse Jackson’s (Octavia Spencer, “The Help”) head suddenly popped up above the door. Terrifying and amazing at the same time.

* I really enjoyed Dr. McAndrew’s nickname for Dr. Grace’s new boyfriend: “Yosemite Sam.” Although this reference makes no sense, I appreciated the imagery.

* After Dash and Delaney are interrupted a second time by Jordi, desperate Dash says he only needs five minutes! Delaney quickly responds with: “That’s not a selling point.” This was unfortunately the most clever line of the show.

Tune in to "Red Band Society" on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on FOX.
