“Red Band Society” Recap: Witty remarks and bonding moments

In this week’s episode of “Red Band Society,” it’s Jordi’s (Nolan Sotillo, “Prom”) big surgery day and Leo (Charlie Rowe, Neverland) feels like the nightmare of losing his own leg is happening all over again. We learn that Jordi’s cancer has spread and Dr. McAndrews (Dave Annable, “Brothers & Sisters) doesn’t go through with the amputation. Leo expresses his outrage and disappointment at losing the chance to finally be on a level playing field with someone. What Leo doesn’t understand is not having surgery is worse than actually having the surgery. Ever-so-wise Charlie (Griffin Gluck, “Private Practice”) reminds us: “One of the hardest things in a hospital is to have someone else get exactly what you wanted.”
We get a peek at Kara’s (Zoe Levin, “Palo Alto”) home life in episode two, but the show failed to make me feel bad for her. Having a lesbian mother who left her husband for the nanny doesn’t make us want to forgive her any less for her incessant bad attitude. However, her failing heart and her slim chances of getting a new one do.
Kara and Emma (Ciara Bravo, “Big Time Rush”) stop firing witty remarks at one another for about five minutes so they can bond over their personal family problems. Can a friendship be salvaged from the wreck they have already created? While their banter can be entertaining, it would be nice for the main girls on the show to befriend one another.
Leo and Dash (Astro, “The X Factor”) play hooky from the hospital to crash a college frat party, conveniently located across the street. The portrayal of this party, located in a beautiful and too-clean-for-college-kids mansion, is so inaccurate it is hilarious. For example, the bulldog mascot is in attendance. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see Clawed the Eagle at the next AU frat party? Needless to say, things do not go exactly as planned for Leo during his rebellious escape.
Next week, I hope to see more of Nurse Jackson (Octavia Spencer, “The Help”). Spencer steals every scene and she definitely deserves more lines.
Observations/things worth chuckling about:
*This episode has further proven to me the show’s fan base will rarely move past your average middle schooler or those in love with “The Fault in Our Stars.” I sometimes fit into both categories.
*The moment when Dash simultaneously compared college students to One Direction and zombies is one of my favorite moments of the show thus far.
*In an amazingly corny scene, Jordi goes under the knife and unconsciously starts singing and playing the guitar while wearing a leather jacket. Truly entertaining.
*The funny but sad truth that Charlie can hear everything said about him, but say nothing:“I’m already in a coma. It’s hard to bum me out.”
