Sports on your TV Jan. 20-26

Sports Editor Jennifer Reyes will make weekly recommendations on what games to catch on AU-provided cable.

Tuesday night will be packed with back-to-back big college basketball conference games. Big 12 foes Kansas State will visit No. 9 Iowa State (Ch. 32 ESPN2, 7-9 p.m.). No. 6 Wisconsin hosts No. 25 Iowa, the Big Ten rivals will be facing each other for the first time this season (Ch. 30 ESPN, 9-11 p.m.)

For the serious sports journalist, a new episode of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel will air on Tuesday night. The critically acclaimed show will feature a piece on Sunday Night Football’s Cris Collinsworth. (Ch. 53 HBO, 10-11 p.m.).

Wednesday night will feature the first of three nationally televised Wizards games this week. Rising Wizards’ star John Wall and company will be taking on the Oklahoma City Thunder, who sit in 9th place in the Western Conference with a record of 20-20. It will be the annual homecoming for Thunder star and reigning MVP Kevin Durant as he visits his hometown of Washington, D.C. (Ch. 30 ESPN, 8-10:30 p.m.). The Thunder are three games out of the 8th seed for the playoffs, so every game now counts.

In case you are missing the Winter Olympics, Thursday night will be the kickoff of the 2015 Winter X Games: Aspen. The opening events will feature competitions in snowboarding and snowmobiling. (Ch. 30 ESPN, 9-11 p.m.).

Friday, a slow evening of sports, has slim pickings for excitement. If you are staying out all night you still might be able to catch the Australian Open: Third Round Play when you return (Ch. 32 ESPN2, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.).

For March Madness training, Saturday will feature 18 college basketball games. You will want to catch No. 11 Kansas at No. 17 Texas (Ch. 18 CBS, 2-4 p.m.), No. 19 Oklahoma at No. 21 Baylor (Ch. 32 ESPN2, 6-8 p.m.), and just for fun No. 1 Kentucky at South Carolina (Ch. 30 ESPN, noon to 2 p.m.). If undefeated No. 1 Kentucky doesn’t draw enough blood versus 106th offense in the country for you, maybe UFC Fight Night: Gustagsson vs Johnson will do the trick (Ch. 6 FOX, 8-10 p.m.).

On Sunday night the brand new NFL Pro Bowl format will debut, with teams selected by Hall-of-Famers Chris Carter and Michael Irvin facing each other. (Ch. 30 ESPN, 8-11 p.m.). But if you actually want to see a competition in basketball, the “Commonwealth Clash,” No. 2 Virginia at Virginia Tech, will air on Ch.12 WDCA at 1-3 p.m.

On Monday you can take a little break from watching sports on the television and visit Bender Arena and watch American take on Patriot League rivals Army. (7-9 p.m.)
