Women’s basketball triumphs over Hampton

The AU women’s basketball team won its second straight win of the season, 58-46 against Hampton University.

Alexis Dobbs contributed 22 points while Geleisa George added 14 points. Arron Zimmerman posted a double-double with 11 points with 12 rebounds.

Hampton (5-3, 0-0 MEAC ) had the advantage to open the game after Nicole Hamilton scored, but Zimmerman quickly answered from AU with a three-point jump shot. This was short-lived after the Pirates scored three baskets bringing the game to 10-5 at 12:06. With 6:52 however, three pointers by Dobbs and Zimmerman left the score at 14-13.

Zimmerman turned the game around for AU (5-2, 0-0 PL) in the first half with 4:06 remaining, putting the Eagles up 17-15. However, fortunes took a turn for the Pirates in the closing minutes as Alyssa Bennett scored at the 1:20 to cut the Eagle lead to one which would carry into half time.

Dobbs was on a roll in the second half, scoring a 3-pointer and extending AU’s lead 38-23 with 11:11 on the clock.

The Pirates responded with points by Georgianna Gilbeaux and a lay-up by Hamilton leaving the score at 47-42 with 3:19 left in regulation. However, a foul by Malia Tate-DeFreitas at the 3:04 mark gave Dobbs the opportunity to make two consecutive free throws, giving the Eagles a seven point lead. Dobbs would continue to hit her free throws in the final minutes of the game en route to the 12 point win.

The Eagles will play Drexel University on Dec. 5.
