Defeat to UVA ends AU lacrosse’s win streak at five

The Eagles five-game win streak has ended.

The AU women’s lacrosse team (5-7, 3-0 PL) dropped its first match in almost three weeks, falling April 2 to the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers (7-6, 0-4 ACC) 16-4.

Despite the loss, Kimberly Collins has continued her own personal streak of excellent play. Over the past five games, she has netted 12 goals. Against UVA, she added a hat trick to her total, putting her scoring streak to 35 games.

The first half of the game was all Virginia. The Cavaliers scored nine unanswered goals, leaving the score at 9-0 entering halftime. UVA’s whopping 32-10 advantage in shots was a major contributing factor to its large lead throughout the game.

After halftime, UVA poured on two more goals before Jordan Harrington was finally able to find the back of the net. Collins scored three goals in the game’s final 12 minutes, but it proved to be too little, too late.

For AU, Collins led the team in goals with three and in assists with one. Goalie Teal Harrison contributed nine saves, and Laura Dawson collected four ground balls.

For the Cavaliers, Morgan Stephens led her squad with a hat trick. Ashlee Warner added three assists, and Goalie Liz Colgan made three saves.

AU will look to get back into victory mode April 7 at 1 p.m. at Lehigh University (3-8, 1-3 PL). If the Eagles can pull out a win, they will clinch a spot in the 2013 Patriot League Tournament.
