Men's soccer brief

Men's soccer loses to Holy Cross in penalty kicks, ends league title hopes

The AU men's soccer team fell to the College of the Holy Cross in the semifinals of the Patriot League tournament 2-1 via penalty kicks, ending their shot at a league championship and spot in the NCAA tournament.

Holy Cross took the early 1-0 lead with 19 minutes remaining in the first half, as Kyle Miller slipped one past freshman goalkeeper Matt Makowski to give Holy Cross the lead.

AU would answer back in the second half, in the 56th minute, thanks to a goal by sophomore midfielder David Menzie to tie the game up at one each.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the two teams went to penalty kicks, where the Crusaders outscored the Eagles 5-3. The five Holy Cross shooters all found the net but only senior midfielder Phil Purdy, junior defender Karsten Smith and sophomore midfielder Danny Shannon scored for AU.

The loss ends the Eagles' season at 9-7-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the Patriot League.
