Field hockey nets fifth consecutive win to dominate Terrapin Invite

Senior forward Heidi Hershberger scored two game-winning goals at the Terrapin Invitational over the weekend, leading AU to a 3-2 win over Northwestern and a 3-1 victory against Temple.

AU entered Saturday's game against Northwestern riding a three-game winning streak, and again got off to a fast start. Sophomore Irene Schickhardt scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season just two minutes into the game to give AU an early lead. A little over 10 minutes later, junior Denise Infante scored off of a corner pass from her sister Camila Infante to give AU a 2-0 lead.

Northwestern cut the deficit to one with a little over 10 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Cassie Miller. However, AU struck back a minute later when Hershberger scored off of a deflection to give the Eagles a two goal lead at the half.

AU controlled play in the second half, outshooting Northwestern 9-2. However, Northwestern cut the lead to one with under 20 minutes remaining on Elizabeth Dobbs' first goal of the year. The Eagles held on for the one-goal victory, their fourth in a row after starting out the season with consecutive losses.

On Sunday, AU rallied from an early deficit to win another hard-fought contest against Temple. The Eagles fell behind just thirteen minutes into the game, but Camila Infante scored her second goal of the season less than 10 minutes later to tie the game at one.

The teams entered halftime knotted at one, but the Eagles quickly took the lead on another deflection goal by Hershberger. Schickhardt gave AU some breathing room with under 25 minutes remaining, slamming home a rebound to give AU a 3-1 lead.

The Eagles again dominated the game statistically, out shooting Temple 18-5, including an 11-1 advantage in the second half. Senior goalie Allison Fayfich made two saves to earn the victory. Temple goalie Erin Hanshue made eight saves in the loss.

The Eagles look for their sixth win Saturday at 1 p.m. against Towson.
