In honor of his second album “Zeros,” Declan McKenna returned to the 9:30 Club on Oct. 12 to give a memorable performance with Annie DiRusso opening. A concert infused with the high school nostalgia of McKenna’s debut album, “What Do You Think About the Car?,” DiRusso's hypnotic talent and the booming energy of the crowd, McKenna and DiRusso proved that they are truly defining musicians of Gen Z.

AU Players is returning to the stage this semester with events that focus on increasing student creativity and community bonding. The club had previously become inactive during the pandemic because they had difficulties organizing virtual events.

American University’s new Center for Environment, Community, and Equity held its campus-wide launch event Oct. 20. Students, faculty and staff from various environmental disciplines were introduced to the center’s leadership and their vision for the function of the CECE. The event closed with remarks from keynote speaker Maxine Burkett, deputy assistant secretary for oceans, fisheries and polar affairs for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs.

In celebration of Emirati Women’s Day, the United Arab Emirates Embassy presented “While the Coffee Grounds Settle: Stories from the UAE,” from Sept. 23 to Oct. 14. The exhibit brought the narratives of Middle Eastern women to the forefront.

American University welcomed Afro-Indigenous activist and poet Autumn Rose Williams to discuss Indigenous awareness and appreciation. Hosted by the Students for Change and Indigenous Initiatives, the Oct. 10 conversation was centered around empowering the Indigenous community and increasing visibility of Indigenous people.

For the past two years, The Eagle has released a staff diversity report as part of our work to take tangible steps to diversify our staff and our coverage. We know that simply measuring this data is not enough, but our hope is that in doing so, we can continue to provide a level of transparency to ensure that our staff more accurately represents the community that we cover. The Eagle’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion group is continuing to meet biweekly this semester and is committed to improving the diversity of both its staff and coverage.
