A slow start fueled by attacking errors and a relaxed defense forced the AU women’s volleyball team to drop it’s first set at home in over a month, but the team rallied back and pulled out a 4-1 victory over Navy on Tuesday night. The Eagles used quick starts to the second and third sets and a stronger defensive block presence to wear down the midshipmen and earn another conference win.

The AU women’s volleyball team found themselves in an unfamiliar position Friday night in Bender Arena, down 22-19 to Bucknell and in danger of losing their first set in Patriot League play this season. However, the Eagles rallied back, led by timely kills from senior outside hitter Allison Cappellino and senior setter Monika Smidova to take the first set 27-25 over the Bison.

Another Patriot League match for the women’s volleyball team, another three-set victory. The Eagles have won five straight Patriot League matches without dropping a set, dating back to the 2014 Patriot League Tournament. AU’s balanced attack buried the Army West Point Black Knights 25-15, 25-20, 25-14 Friday night in Bender Arena.

The AU women’s volleyball team rose early on Saturday morning to vanquish the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers in three sets in day two of the AU Volleyball Classic. With victory over UMBC, the Eagles moved to 2-0 in the AU Volleyball Classic after defeating William and Mary on Friday. AU fell to the University of Virginia in a thrilling five-set affair in the championship of the Eagles’ inaugural volleyball event Saturday night.

Following a weekend of defeats at the hands of high level competition in Hawaii, the women’s volleyball team reversed its fortunes in New York. The Eagles strung together three straight three-set victories to go undefeated at the Columbia Invitational.

In its first five outings of the season, the AU women’s soccer team struggled offensively, managing only three goals total. However, against LIU Brooklyn, the Eagles offense came out in full force with freshmen midfielder JoJo Miller and forward Madie Light tallying goals in AU’s first home victory of the season.

When the United States women’s field hockey team triumphed in the gold medal match of the Pan American Games, a familiar AU face was among the victors. AU field hockey coach Steve Jennings led Team USA to six consecutive victories during the tournament in Toronto, including a 2-1 defeat of Argentina in the final match on July 24. The gold medal was the second consecutive first-place finish for Team USA at the Pan American Games.

Barry Goldberg, the head volleyball coach at AU, unveiled the 2015 schedule for his reigning Patriot League championship team on Monday, June 15. The Eagles, looking to build on last year’s 26-7 record and NCAA Tournament appearance, have a schedule that includes four regular-season tournaments and matches against three 2014 NCAA tournament qualifiers.

After leading the AU Women’s Basketball team to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, Megan Gebbia signed a three-year contract extension. Gebbia’s new contract keeps the reigning Patriot League Coach of the Year with AU through the 2021 season.

Pursuing a post-collegiate wrestling career was never the plan for Richard Perry, at least not initially. Neither was coaching. As a freshman college student-athlete at Bloomsburg College in Pennsylvania, he was initially focused on building off his successful high school career where he won two state titles in Connecticut.

Junior Kinnari Badger won the 100-meter dash at the Maryland Invitational March 28, setting a new AU school record in the process. Junior Joshua Ellis and senior Tom Woermer recorded IC4A-qualifying times in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 10,000-meter race respectively at the Raleigh Relays on March 27.

AU Athletics cancelled the planned fan bus to send AU students to Iowa City, Iowa for the Women’s Basketball team's first ever appearance in program history in the First Round NCAA Tournament game Thursday due to lack of student sign-ups. The bus trip was cancelled because AU Athletics did not reach the minimum of 25 AU students required to make the trip financially feasible, according to AU Blue Crew Council Chairman Benjamin Zenker.

The AU Women’s Basketball team’s success on the court during the season did not transfer to large volumes of student support in the stands. The Eagles, who recently secured the Patriot League regular season conference title for the third time in program history, are experiencing only marginally higher attendance than previous years.

The Eagles began the second half on a 25-6 run to break open a close game and overcome the eighth-seeded Lafayette Leopards 79-56 in the Patriot League Quarterfinals March 6 at Bender Arena. The Eagles led by five at halftime but quickly opened up a double digit lead that stretched to as many as 31 points during a second half where the Eagles shot 46.9 percent from the field.

The AU Women’s Basketball team clinched the top seed in the Patriot League tournament by virtue of their 41-29 victory over the Navy Mids in Annapolis, Maryland. The Eagles hold a two-game lead over second-place Army with only one game remaining in the regular season, meaning all of Eagles Patriot League Tournament games will take place at Bender Arena.

The Eagles kept their momentum rolling with their fifth straight victory, 58-50 over the BU Terriers Feb. 18. AU led from the opening tip, and stretched their lead to as many as 14 points in the second half while holding off a late BU rally.

When the AU Women’s Basketball team entered Patriot League play with a 5-6 record after struggling through much of the non-conference schedule, few could have predicted what has followed: a 12-2 conference record and sole possession of first place in the Patriot League. A driving force behind the Eagles league success has been the emergence of junior forward Michelle Holmes.
