Senior captain David Terao and AU head wrestling coach Teague Moore held back tears on Saturday afternoon as the two men reflected on their five-year journey together, which culminated in a fourth place finish and a standing ovation for Terao in Madison Square Garden.

The clocked ticked down, but Maria Liddane kept
running. Leading the Eagles down the court on nearly every possession, the
sophomore point guard tried desperately to find her teammates and put the ball
in the hoop, but AU, a team with only one senior in the starting lineup, came
up five points short. Dropping to the Loyola Greyhounds 55-50, the Eagles
notched their sixth consecutive loss and ended their final regular season home
game with frustration.

When Ari Booth took the court on Wednesday night
as the only senior in AU’s starting line-up, she faced the expectation of
leading her team to a victory and snapping a two-game losing streak. With
confidence and precision, Booth succeeded, pushing the Eagles past the Boston
University Terriers 79-33 and bringing the team its sixth conference win.

Darkness engulfed Bender Arena, but beneath the dim spotlight in the center of the wrestling mat, senior David Terao emerged. Dressed in his blue AU singlet, Terao faced his opponent, 125-pound Brant Leadbeter from the United States Naval Academy, and started to compete. The clocked ticked down. The referee watched carefully. Fans cheered from the stands. But Terao stayed focused.

Wrestling with the athletic intensity that helped him earn the nickname “Diablo” as a young athlete, AU senior captain John Boyle captured a 10-2 major decision against Navy’s Drew Daniels to give AU an 11-6 lead heading into intermission on Jan 16. The Eagles, however, failed to hang on, and after giving up falls in the 184-pound match and the 197-pound match, AU dropped to the Midshipmen 21-17.

Twenty-three flags line the walls of Frailey Pool, each one symbolizing a country that has been represented by a student-athlete on the AU swim team. When Caylee Watson joined the team two years ago, swimming head coach Mark Davin added a new flag to represent her home -- the U.S. Virgin Islands. Just last month, Watson, now a junior in the School of Public Affairs, earned an honor much bigger than a flag: a spot on the U.S. Virgin Islands Olympic team.

Olympic champion Mark Spitz once said, “Life is true to form; records are meant to be broken,” and his phrase sums up the 2015 athletic season for the Eagles. AU captured two Patriot League championships and sent two teams and two individual athletes to the NCAA tournament. Four Eagles won Patriot League Scholar Athletes of the Year awards, and Athletic Director Billy Walker earned a place in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. AU made history in 2015, and The Eagle has compiled the highlights.

As the temperature starts to drop and the winter weather makes its way to D.C., The Eagle caught up with freshman guard Kaitlyn Lewis to talk about her goals, career aspirations and superstitions. Lewis has logged over a dozen minutes in four games so far this year and said she looks forward to playing conference teams at the end of the month. Lewis said the speed of the college game has created new challenges, but her teammates and coaches are helping her learn additional skills to adapt to the increased pace of play.

For 27 years, head coach Barry Goldberg has stood at the helm of the AU women’s volleyball program and helped the Eagles earn 13 Patriot League titles and two Colonial Athletic Association conference championships. Goldberg and his team made history in 2013 after winning two NCAA tournament games, and the longtime coach looks forward to coaching the team in this year’s tournament as well. The Eagles take on the University of Kentucky tonight at 4:30 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio, and Goldberg said he expects the match to be challenging because of Kentucky’s size and athleticism on the court.

Freshman forward Cecily Carl chose AU after being offered scholarships from 13 different Division I schools, and she has already notched her first collegiate point for the Eagles this season. With Patriot League games approaching, Carl said she looks forward to competing against teams in the conference but remains focused on playing against her remaining non-conference opponents. Carl and the Eagles take the court tonight against the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and she said the team will be playing with an underdog mentality in search of its first win. Earlier this week, The Eagle sat down with Carl to talk Broadway, business and basketball.

Freshman guard Elina Koskimies came to the United States looking for the opportunity to play collegiate basketball, and she has already made contributions to the Eagles this season in her first four games. Before AU, Koskimies attended a sports high school where she traveled across Europe for tournaments, and she said she has enjoyed learning a new style of basketball. The Eagle caught up with Koskimies before her first game to discuss culture, campus life her and championship goals.

In late August, AU track and cross country assistant coach Kerri Gallagher stood at the starting line of the women’s 1500m World Championship semifinal to compete against the best runners around the globe. Gallagher finished eighth with a time of 4:17.63, three spots short of advancing to the finals. Today, she not only spends her days racing around the track in preparation for the Olympic Trials, but she also commits dozens of hours each week to working with the AU men’s and women’s cross country teams. Gallagher caught up with The Eagle to talk about her international experience, running career and the lessons she hopes to pass on to her athletes.
