Ever notice how lame most summer movies are? With the exception of the surprisingly good "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," virtually every movie of last summer was crap. If it's not filled to the frame with CG atrocities (I'm lookin' at you, "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"), it's just boring.

So, that gets me to "13 Going On 30." It's Jennifer Garner - you know, the girl from "Alias" and Elektra Nachos-or-whatever from "Daredevil." So this is her first movie where she's, like, the star. I guess she's hoping "13" will do for her what "Legally Blonde" did for Reese Witherspoon.

The lighting is dim in the bar inside the Jefferson Hotel, and Baltimore native Thomas Jane is focused. It looks as if he just woke up and needs a shave, but the 35-year-old actor is days away from the debut of the biggest role of his life. Jane has spent the majority of his career in action films, playing a significant role in 1999's "Deep Blue Sea," while occasionally appearing in romantic comedies like 2002's "The Sweetest Thing." In "The Punisher," which opens tomorrow, Jane plays Frank Castle, whose entire family is murdered by a crime boss.

"Kill Bill: Vol. 2" will not be the only film opening tomorrow centering around a roaring rampage of revenge. "The Punisher," the next big-screen adaptation of a Marvel comic, opens tomorrow as well. Both plots contain individuals seeking vengeance after an act of mass violence committed against those closest to them.

For the most part, N.E.R.D. mixes simple bass lines with live drums, keyboards and riffy guitars with funky success, although on its new album, "Fly or Die," some of the music comes off as sloppy and forced.

Mel Gibson's latest film, "The Passion of the Christ," has caused quite a stir since it first caught the attention of the Anti-Defamation League last June. Gibson's film, which he financed with nearly $30 million of his own money, will be released on Wednesday, the beginning of the Christian holy season of Lent.

When the Tavern opened at 7:20 p.m. Saturday night for rapper Talib Kweli's concert, the line of fans in the Mary Graydon Center overflowed outside. Kweli's rhymes brought in a crowd of more than 950 people - about 250 people over the fire capacity, according to assistant Student Union Board director Jason Geisinger's estimate.

Power-pop band Jackson played a strong opening set for Sugarcult and Story of the Year at the Black Cat last Thursday. Jackson's set started while Black Cat patrons were still being let into the club at a snail's pace. At the end of its set the crowd was about 200 strong. Jackson mostly played songs from its debut self-titled EP that was released in April, such as "All the Way," "Blinders" and the pop-like "Fell Into," for which front-man Chris Shiflett said he "was horribly out of tune."
