As the elected officials for American University’s two on-campus Advisory Neighborhood Commission districts, School of Public Affairs freshman Diego Carney and College of Arts and Sciences sophomore Rohin Ghosh have spent the last three months advocating on neighborhood issues that affect students.
Every spring in D.C., approximately 3,700 Japanese cherry trees bloom bright pink and white. This year, the National Park Service declared peak bloom, when 70 percent of the blossoms are open, on March 23.
One week into 2023, a 13-year-old boy named Karon Blake was fatally shot in the Brookland neighborhood in Northeast D.C. The next week, one woman was killed and another teenager and man were injured in a shooting in the district’s Benning Ridge neighborhood. At the start of February, D.C. Metro worker Robert Cunningham was killed and three passengers were injured during yet another shooting, this time in the Potomac Avenue Metro station.

Popular D.C. bagel shop Call Your Mother opened a new location Feb. 3 on Connecticut Avenue near the Van Ness neighborhood. The local chain announced the new spot, which is less than two miles from American University, on Jan. 3, replacing Little Red Fox cafe.

D.C.’s major power players won big in the midterm elections Tuesday, as Mayor Muriel Bowser, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson were all reelected with overwhelming support.
The 2022 midterm elections are fast approaching this Tuesday, Nov. 8. On the federal level, all 435 House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats will be contested. Additionally, races for state governors are being held for 36 of the 50 states.
