AU's a cappella groups kick off fall season with preview concert

Most of AU’s a cappella groups took the stage for the first time this semester at their preview concert on Sept. 8. On A Sensual Note, Treble in Paradise, Dime a Dozen and Pitches Be Trippin’ performed two songs each for a packed crowd in Kay Spiritual Life Center, stirring up excitement for the year to come for the a cappella community. The concert was held a week before their auditions on Sept. 15, and each group hoped to show new students what they’re all about.










After campus lockdown, administrators announce changes to AU alert protocol

After reports of an “armed intruder” near campus on July 18 led to a university-wide lockdown and complaints about the effectiveness of AU’s emergency alert system, administrators say they are now changing AU Alert protocols to send notifications to all current students “regardless of their registration status.”


Metro Boomin rocks Bender Arena for kickoff Student Union Board concert

On Saturday Aug. 25, producer and DJ Metro Boomin offered up his talents for Bender Arena as the headliner for Student Union Board’s Welcome Week concert. The show was opened by Shiva, who performed a DJ set, and local DMV rapper Kelow LaTesha. Metro opened his set with one of his most famous productions, “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” by Kanye West. 






Opinion: D.C. Council practices 'pick and choose' democracy with plans to overturn Initiative 77

On June 19, Washington residents voted in the city’s primary elections for several municipal positions, ranging from the mayoral election and city council memberships to the election of the attorney general. Voters also decided on the implementation of Initiative 77, which eliminates the “tipped minimum wage” in the district. Currently at $3.89 per hour plus tips, the initiative would catalyze a plan to raise the minimum wage for all tipped positions to $15 per hour by 2025.



AU athletics department to host 'Unity in Our Community' event at men’s basketball game this winter

In response to several racist and divisive incidents at AU, including the posting of anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic fliers on campus last winter, the American University Athletics Department will host its inaugural “Unity In Our Community” event in February in conjunction with the men’s basketball team’s game against Holy Cross.
