The American University Police Department arrested a person previously barred from campus Saturday night for unlawful entry, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, according to a Metropolitan Police Department report.

American University will host the 43rd National Collegiate Taekwondo Association (NCTA) Championships in Bender Arena the weekend of April 6-8. AU earned the right to host the tournament after the volunteer coaches, Miyako Yerick and Masters Richard-Duane Chambers and Ryan Huang, from the AU Taekwondo Club submitted a bid on behalf of the school.

No. 3 UCLA crushed No. 14 AU’s hopes of playing in the NCAA Tournament’s second round Saturday afternoon. The Bruins defeated the Eagles 71-60 in Los Angeles, ending AU’s historic season.

By the time redshirt senior Brett Dempsey took the mat at Bender Arena for the final time in his career, the AU wrestling team was already guaranteed a dual meet victory over Ohio. The 26th ranked heavyweight was determined, though, to end his home career with a victory.

After eight grueling, physical matches, AU wrestling’s dual meet against Drexel Sunday in Bender Arena came down to the final bout between two nationally ranked wrestlers. Redshirt junior Josh Terao, ranked ninth at 133 pounds, and Drexel’s Austin DeSanto, ranked fourth, wrestled a back-and-forth match that was ultimately decided by a DeSanto takedown in sudden victory overtime. DeSanto’s win handed Drexel a 25-16 team victory.

Freshmen Gage Curry and Eric Hong earned comprehensive victories to lead the AU wrestling team to victory against Bucknell Sunday in Bender Arena. Hong followed up his major decision victory against Binghamton on Friday by earning a first period fall against Bucknell (3-12, 2-6). Curry earned a 15-1 technical fall victory to close out the meet for the Eagles.

Ambassador Susan Rice will guest coach the women’s basketball team Saturday against Army West Point, the Athletic Department announced in an email Wednesday. Rice is the former National Security Advisor for Barack Obama and a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

When the AU volleyball team faced off against Navy a month ago at Bender Arena, the marathon match was contested in five sets over two hours. On Sunday in the Patriot League Championship, AU made quick work of the Mids, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22 to earn its fifth consecutive league title.

The AU women’s volleyball team will hope to ride the momentum from their 16-game winning streak to a 15th Patriot League title this weekend. For the fifth year in a row, the Eagles will host the Patriot League Tournament after securing the top seed in the league. The Eagles posted a 15-1 record in the league, and have been undefeated since a Sept. 26 four-set loss on the road to Navy.

A balanced offense from the AU women’s volleyball team allowed the Eagles to cruise to a 25-14, 25-10, 25-22 victory against the Bucknell Bison, Sunday at Bender Arena. Eight Eagles recorded kills and the team finished the match with a 0.479 hitting percentage.

The AU women's soccer team finished its season with a 3-0 loss to Army West Point Saturday at Reeves Field. The Black Knights (4-11-2, 2-6-1 PL) capitalized on corner kicks and free kicks and put the Eagles (2-15, 1-8 PL) under defensive pressure throughout the match.

Four months ago, Sean Graham received a phone call from Matt Centrowitz Sr. about the longtime American University coach’s plan to step down from his role at AU. Graham, an assistant coach with Kentucky at the time, didn’t think much of the call in the moment. Graham and the Kentucky track and field team were busy preparing for the Southeastern Conference and NCAA championship meets. It wasn’t until after Kentucky wrapped up its season that Graham took time to reflect on the coaching vacancy at AU.

At halftime Friday night in Bender Arena, the AU volleyball team lacked fluidity and consistency in their offensive approach, trailing Navy by two sets to none in a game with major implications in the Patriot League. Navy had beaten the Eagles in their previous meeting on Sept. 26 and a loss would make it unlikely that the team would once again be regular season conference champions.

The Eagles never trailed in any set and controlled the tempo of play throughout to claim their sixth consecutive victory after losing to Navy Sept. 26.

After a disjointed and error-plagued match, the AU women’s soccer team slumped to its ninth consecutive defeat, against Colgate 3-0 at Reeves Field Sunday. The game also marked the 11th time in 12 games that the Eagles have been held without a goal.
