As this is my final column, and quite possibly the last time I will ever have a byline, I’m trying very hard to be poignant. I could carry on about the lessons I’ve learned as a food writer, about the tips I’ve gathered from the people I’ve met, or I could compile a list of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten in Washington and so on, but I won’t. My mind is too busy being preoccupied with to-do lists, worries over my financial situation, final exams to cram for and goodbyes to make.

Last month, I officially became a member of the AU student population: I bought a pair of TOMS and an iPhone.

I, like most of the world, am obsessed with Steig Larsson’s “Millennium” trilogy.

Let’s just admit it: Valentine’s Day sucks.

I recently discovered that I have an unhealthy, love/hate relationship with the show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.”

Though anxiety over finals is slowly but surely bubbling in my stomach, I still found time to procrastinate over Thanksgiving break and make my Christmas wish list.

There is so much I love about autumn.

I realize that my last column may have been a bit outdated. Why would I recommend cookbooks to a generation that’s rejected the printed word for Kindles? In my perfect world, e-readers and digital books don’t exist; but, this is 2011 and I need to get real.

Everything I know about cooking and eating I learned from my father.

As a lover of both film and food, I am proud to say that some of my favorite meals have preceded and followed great movies.

Having lived in D.C. for three years and just outside of it for most of my life, I’ve realized that you have to be borderline-obsessed with the Redskins, pandas and cheeseburgers to truly fit in in this town. Have a conversation with any Washingtonian about Hightower’s chances of being the ‘Skins starting running back, giving Tai Shan back to China or Bobby Flay’s potato chip-laden burgers and you’re in for life.

I love food. I dream about it, enjoy cooking it and, of course, love eating it. I also love to write, so I count myself very lucky that I’ve been given the opportunity to merge the two passions by working for The Eagle. I’ve loved writing about my culinary adventures while in Rome, but what I love more is how those culinary adventures will always remind me of my favorite memories of my semester in Italy.

I’m going to admit it, once and for all: I’m a food snob.

While living in Rome, I often find myself wishing that I had 10 sets of eyes. Even on my short walk to campus each morning, I’m nearly tripping over the cobblestones because my eyes have traveled to the nearest lemon-tree-adorned balcony or window display of Italian leather shoes.

I like to think that I’m a good cook. I’m no Ina Garten or Julia Child by any means, but I know how to roast asparagus and sauté a chicken cutlet, which is more than I can say for most 20 year-olds. But being in Italy, where some of the greatest chefs are born and bred, I thought I could learn a thing or two by taking a cooking class. Luckily for me, the American University of Rome offers cooking lessons for a mere 15 euro every Tuesday night. I was game.

Since I made the decision to study abroad in Rome, I have been dreaming about my first real Italian meal in the Eternal City.
