“Empire" Recap: Truthbombs and troubles
CHUCK HODES, FOX
Note: The following recap contains spoilers for sixth episode of “Empire,” entitled “Out, Damned Spot.”
Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson, “Think Like a Man”) opened this week’s episode of “Empire” with a bang, storming out of a family gathering in a sexy lingerie outfit and proclaiming “by the way...THIS is an ass!”
Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard, “Hustle and Flow) is still up to his devious ploys, sending mixed signals to Cookie, evading detectives and pursuing shady medical treatments. But who are we to judge? The man is obviously beginning to face the terrible reality of his disease and seems desperate to establish Empire Entertainment before he faces his inevitable death. Lucious also reveals to Vernon (Malik Yoba, “Cool Runnings”) that he killed cousin Bunkie (Antoine McKay, “The Weather Man”); this information then then leaks to Andre (Trai Byers, “Selma”). Vernon arranges for someone else to confess to the murder, and Lucious rests easy...for now.
Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett, “Mighty Ducks”) experiences relationship issues with his boyfriend as his newfound fame takes precedence over personal life. And when Jamal is interviewed by famous rapper, producer and talk show host Sway Calloway (playing himself), he claims that the only thing he is in love with right now is his music.
While Cookie is hustling to promote Jamal and his hot new song, she also begins to start managing a troubled diva by the name of Elle Dallas (Courtney Love, “Kurt & Courtney”). In typical Cookie fashion, she swoops in, starts a fight and speaks some truths. She constantly encourages her artists to stay true to themselves and to their art.
And finally, speaking of guest cameos, Raven-Symone makes an appearance in the final few minutes of this week’s episode with an adorable little girl in tow. She greets the Lyon family with enthusiasm, and then drops the bomb on Jamal: the little girl is his daughter.
Naturally, everyone in the room fell out of their chairs, Twitter exploded and the world probably stopped spinning for a few seconds.
Every “Empire” episode ends with a jaw-dropper, but, honestly, who could have anticipated this one?
