EPIC FIREWORKS, FLICKR

Each week, columnist Trent Burns digs up the best songs you haven’t heard yet. Take a listen:

Monday

Mike Doughty, “Light Will Keep Your Heart Beating in the Future”

Never miss a story

(If you like: Gorillaz, They Might Be Giants, sweet monotone goodness)
If you’re wondering what Mike Doughty is up to 14 years after his landmark alt-rock group Soul Coughing broke up, this track off his latest album “Stellar Motel” should answer any and all questions.

Tuesday

Shakey Graves, “The Perfect Parts”

(If you like: Black Keys, Ivan & Alyosha, indie texas blues)
Shakey Graves has definitely come a long way from his Texas blues bar roots. But rest assured, this track from 2014’s “And the War Came” shows that while you may take the man out of Texas, you may never take Texas out of the man.

Wednesday

U.S. Royalty, “More to This”

(If you like: Tame Impala, PAPA, locally sourced indie rock)
D.C.’s own U.S. Royalty debuted this new single at last weekend’s All Things Go Fall Classic music festival. If you weren’t there, catch up with the latest from one of the cities best local bands.

Thursday

The Almighty Terribles, “How Could You?”

(If you like: Dr. Dog, Modest Mouse, bands your friends have never heard of)
Throw thursday way back and way underground. This New Jersey based band had an all too short run, but this track off its third and final album “We’re Not the Only Ones” sounds just as sweet even two years later.

Friday

Sleepy Sun “Galaxy Punk”

(If you like: The Flaming Lips, Queens of the Stone Age, strung-out indie-rock)
Sleepy Sun leans heavily on fuzzed-out phaser-laden guitars in this track, making a swirling trippy mess. Lie out in the sun and pretend D.C. is Venice Beach.
