The Halloween Scene

A guide to what’s going on in D.C. this weekend.

It’s the event we’ve been waiting for all month - Halloween weekend. Whether you’re a fan of the costumes, the festivities or even just the candy, there’s an event happening for you. Take advantage of the occasion to go out into the city and check out one of these haunts.

Trick-or-Treating on Embassy Row

If you think you're too old to go trick or treating, think again. D.C. college students flock to Embassy Row every year to go door to door and country to country for all sorts of sweet treats. It’s an annual tradition, so there’s no way we could leave this one off of our list, and neither should you. Get dressed up and join in on the fun. Remember though - the embassies close by 6 p.m., and some even sooner, so get there early.

When: Friday, Oct. 29 from 3:30-6 p.m.

Where: Embassy Row, Massachusetts Avenue, between Thomas Circle and Ward Circle

Metro stop: Dupont Circle, Red Line

Hilloween

Halloween is a community event, so come out and celebrate with your city. The annual Hilloween festival is taking place at Eastern Market this Friday, with a diverse range of events for all ages. Each activity is sponsored by a local business, organization or school, from horse-drawn hayrides to musical performances. There’s competition as well, with costume contests judged by local retailers and pie contests judged by local restaurants. Whether it's these tricks or just the treats offered by Eastern Market merchants, there’s bound to be something there to get you in the spirit. The event is free, but individual attractions may cost money, so bring your wallet.

When: Friday, Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Where: Eastern Market, Seventh Street SE between North Carolina and Pennsylvania

Metro stop: Eastern Market, Orange, Blue and Silver Lines

Silver Spring Zombie Walk

Ever wondered what the zombie apocalypse would be like? We've got the closest thing - the Silver Spring Zombie walk this Saturday. A horde of zombies (okay, people dressed as zombies) will gather at night to haunt the streets and terrify the living. Along the way, Jackie's Sidebar and Piratz Tavern will be open and offering special Zombie Walk specials on drinks for those above 21. A DJ will be playing music as well, to turn the walk of the dead into an all-out dance party.  The parade ends at the AFI Silver Theatre for a viewing of the movie “Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead.” Get a group of friends together to get dressed up and enjoy a fun night out together.

When: Saturday, Nov. 1; gather at 8 p.m., walk starts at 9 p.m., movie starts at 10:15 p.m.

Where: Walk begins near Jackie's Sidebar, 8081 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD, and ends at AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring, MD

Metro stop: Silver Spring, Red Line

Halloween Howl

If costumes or scary movies aren’t your thing, try the Hamilton's Halloween Howl concert. The program features hit songs such as "Thriller,” "Werewolves of London" and "Black Magic Woman" performed by local singers and musicians. Cal Everett, Cairo Fred, Brandon Ehrgood, John Trupp and the Crimestoppers will provide the music - all you need to bring are your killer dance moves. The front part of the floor will be cleared out for attendees to boogie and bounce the night away at one of the city’s best restaurants. Tickets range from $20-$25 and can be purchased online ahead of time.

When: Saturday, Oct. 25, doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8:30 p.m.

Where: The Hamilton, 600 14th St. NW

Metro Stop: Metro Center, Red Line

Gravensteen Haunted House

The Curse of Frau Mueller is back at it, terrifying the D.C. area with its haunted house attraction. Set in a 50,000 square foot warehouse, the experience involves actors, set design and a horror story that'll have you both spooked and entertained. This is the last weekend that the house is open, so buy your tickets online quickly. For more information about the house, check out this profile from last year.

When: Friday, Oct. 31, to Sunday, Nov. 2, from 7 p.m. to midnight

Where: 50 Florida Ave., NE

Metro stop: NOMA-Gallaudet, Red Line
