“Broad City”: Three essential episodes

Catch up on the acclaimed series before the stars perform at AU on Nov. 1.

The comedy duo “Broad City” is coming to AU this Saturday, and if you don’t know who Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are, now is the time to learn.

These ladies started from the bottom with YouTube webisodes and rose to the comedy-world top with their Comedy Central, Amy Poehler-produced show of the same name. Ending its first season this spring, the premise of “Broad City” revolves around the kooky things New York City throws at Abbi and Ilana. Getting locked out of an apartment, working at a start-up and trying to track down a lost phone in hopes of a date are only a few of the hilarious plots that lead to one of the best seasons of comedic television. Now that they have time to kill before season two brings more stoner jokes and New York City hijinks to the small screen, Glazer and Jacobson are going on tour. The three top-ranked episodes are below.

Episode 2: "Pu$$y Weed"

The title is absurdly hilarious in itself, but this episode is so much more than what the title might lead viewers to assume. Abbi and Ilana get into typical New York City trouble when Abbi decides to get her own dealer, and Ilana puts her foot down on early adulthood and tries to figure out her taxes.

Highlights: Ilana bites into a jawbreaker and Abbi punches a cardboard cutout of a postal service worker.

Episode 5: "Fattest Asses"

Again, “Broad City’s” writers are masters of show titles. This episode takes a more conventional route, at first. Abbi wants to break out of her old, safe habitat and goes to a hip rooftop party with the always eager to party Ilana. The episode even has a “cool outfit buying” montage that ends abruptly after the first dress Abbi tries on turns out to do the trick.

Highlights:  Abbi dancing, truffle oil mac and cheese balls and DJ roommates who try to turn a twosome into a foursome.

Episode 10: "The Last Supper"

The final episode in “Broad City’s” first season contrasts from previous episodes because it is set in one place for most of the episode: a fancy restaurant where Beyonce and Jay Z ate. Abbi’s birthday is a cause for an overpriced meal, and, on her father’s credit card, she and Illana dress in their best outfits and have a solid night out. Ilana orders expensive seafood despite her allergy, and Abbi must save her. It’s all good, though because Amy Poehler is there to do nothing but yell at her waiter husband. The season’s last episode includes a hilariously dark moment when Abbi and Ilana reflect on their bucket lists in a hospital bed while a man dies next to them.
