An arrest has been made in connection with the death of AU Professor Sue Marcum. Deandrew Hamlin, 18, was arrested Monday night in the District and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony fleeing. Hamlin has not yet been in connection with Marcum’s death, and police are continuing their investigation Tuesday.

Sue Marcum, an executive in residence and an accounting and taxation professor in the Kogod School of Business, was found dead in her home Monday morning by Montgomery County Police. Police said there were signs of forced entry at her home, and are treating her death as a homicide. Students said Marcum was a beloved professor, and left the 2:10 p.m. class she was to teach in tears.

Students voice concerns at ‘wonk’ town hall

Students and staff of AU filled about half of the 100 chairs set up in Mary Graydon Center rooms 4 and 5 for the town hall meeting Thursday night to express complaints, concerns, comments and questions regarding “wonk.”

Many students said they thought there was a lack of input from undergraduates in the creative process of the campaign, and others said the university chose to allocate funds inappropriately when endorsing this initiative.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s board of directors approved a decision Thursday to add 10 cents to current Metrobus, Metrorail and MetroAccess fares in order to generate $9.6 million to help close its $40 million budget gap.

The board made the decision to increase fares instead of cutting back on services because it received written feedback from 596 D.C. residents who said they mostly preferred the fare increase, according to a statement from WMATA.

The EcoSense community garden has flourished since its ground-breaking on Campus Beautification Day last May, according to EcoSense President Drew Veysey.

The garden was created last May and has been cared for by members of the entire AU community. Tomatoes, eggplants, basil, parsley, carrots, banana peppers, pumpkins and sunflowers are all growing in the plot behind Nebraska Hall, according to Kate Pinkerton, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences and the EcoSense garden representative.

U.S. News and World Report ranked AU 84th in its annual National Universities Rankings released Aug. 20th. 

AU’s standing on the U.S. News list puts it above Catholic University at 121st and Howard University at 96th. The George Washington University and the University of Maryland-College Park ranked above AU, both with a ranking of 53rd. Georgetown University ranked 24th.
