Simply put, SUB is doing a fantastic job. This year’s SUB staff have already accomplished more in three weeks than last year’s staff accomplished all year. We’ve already had Ted Leo and Phantom Planet and can look forward to Ben Folds coming in November. Though the acts might not appeal to every AU student, they certainly draw wider audiences than the Roots and completely forgettable Tavern shows did in years past.
Not only is the staff thinking more of their constituency - the AU student body - but they’re being more flexible with the bands. Due to touring schedules, Ted Leo could only come on a Thursday afternoon. Though it wasn’t a prime concert-going time slot and many students couldn’t attend due to classes, SUB went with it anyway. It’s better to have a great show that a few people miss out on than not have the show at all.
SUB also deserves kudos for working more closely with on-campus groups. They worked with WVAU to bring Ted Leo and with Artemas Ward Week staff for the appropriately-timed showing of “V for Vendetta.”
With such an outstanding start to the year and the promise of Ben Folds and amazing SUB Cinemas, we expect great things in the future. We can’t wait to see what spring will bring.
