Mysterious manure piles baffle Alaskan authorities

An unidentified person has been dumping large amounts of horse manure outside a strip mall in Anchorage, Alaska, the Anchorage Daily News reported Monday.
Two piles began appearing four months ago, said Ron Teekell, the owner of a storage company next to the dumping site.
Since August, the piles have grown to an estimated 100 tons, the Daily News reported.
"It's the Great Manure Caper of 2007," Teekell said.
Teekell and others suspect the dumper was probably trying to avoid paying expensive disposal fees, which range between $25 and $45 per ton.
Similar piles have also been found two blocks away. The cost of removing the two piles could total $6,000, and authorities said unless the culprit is identified, the lot owner will be legally responsible for cleaning up the mess, the Daily News reported.
