A man in southern India married a female dog in a ceremony last week in an effort to ward off a supposed curse punishing him for previously stoning two dogs to death, BBC News reported.

P. Selvakumar, 33, had suffered paralysis and a loss of hearing since he killed the dogs and hung their bodies from a tree 15 years ago, he told the Hindustan Times.

"On the advice of an astrologer and others, he decided to marry a bitch to get cured," Selvakumar's relative Ramu told BBC News. "Then we arranged Selvakumar's marriage with a bitch."

The stray dog he married, named Selvi, was clothed in a bright orange sari with a flower garland before being led to a temple in Manamudurai where vows were exchanged in a traditional Hindu ceremony, BBC News reported.
